The new teaser for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hints at the return Emperor Palpatine -- who died in Return of the Jedi -- to the newest film in the franchise. And now, the actor responsible for playing the character, Ian McDiarmid, has responded to his return to the series.
McDiarmid, who played the Sith Lord in the Star Wars prequels and the original films, retweeted the teaser, writing, "The dark side is stronger than ever."
The Tony Award winning actor previously reprised the character in the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. His performance in the prequels trilogy has also become a frequent source of memes online since the release of the films. It's unclear at this time in what capacity Palpatine will return for Episode IX.
Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film arrives December 20.
