A new trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: Hunters game from Zynga dropped today, giving players their first glimpse at the hero shooter in action.

The nearly two-minute-long trailer shows various playable characters in action as they battle across different areas based on well-known Star Wars locales such as Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor. Several hunters are on screen at the same time, each one fighting for dominance across a range of specialized battle arenas. Star Wars: Hunters will be free to play and is due for release on the Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android in 2022.

The trailer provides an in-depth look at Star Wars: Hunter’s quirky roster of characters. These include a furious Wookiee named Grozz and a droid who believes itself to be a Jedi, creatively named J-3DI. Dark-side warrior Rieve makes a chilling appearance while a pair of Jawa brothers stacked in a trench coat, simply called Utooni, steal the show. The gameplay clips show each character in action as excited commentators introduce them to the crowd, exclaiming that "the aim of this game is teamwork." While many of these characters were previously introduced in a stylish cinematic trailer, this marks fans' first in-game look at their unique abilities.

Players will be able to customize their characters, mixing and matching their teams as they battle other players in four-on-four contests. Each character has their own fighting style, such as Utooni's ability to build a scrap cannon or the Stormtrooper reinforcements called by Imperial gunner Sentinel. Choosing the right characters and strategizing with their skillsets will be integral to winning each battle.

Star Wars: Hunters was first announced during a Nintendo Direct presentation in early 2021. During that presentation, Zynga President of Publishing, Bernard Kim, said, "We created Star Wars: Hunters for every fan who has ever dreamed about playing a high-intensity action game set in the Star Wars galaxy and are excited to see Switch players embrace our foray into console gaming."

At the same presentation, Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly added "Star Wars: Hunters draws inspiration from classic Star Wars stories and settings, but with a look and feel that is different from anything we have done before. We're thrilled to introduce this wildly creative cast of characters to our fans on Nintendo Switch, where they can join with their friends in thrilling battles at home or on the go."

There are several other Star Wars video games in development, but according to industry insiders, this does not include Star Wars: Battlefront 3. According to notable leaker Tom Henderson, Electronic Arts have decided not to go ahead with Battlefront 3 due to licensing costs. However, fans still have plenty to look forward to with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga due for release in 2022 and a game based on Star Wars: The High Republic reportedly in production.
