After the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many people were confused by how quickly Rey managed to understand the powers of the Force. Even with no master and very little knowledge as to what the Force even is, she was still able to mind-trick stormtroopers and pull Luke's lightsaber to her. Although some have shrugged this off as the character being a Mary Sue, there are numerous clues as to why Rey learned so quickly.

After Kylo Ren captures Rey at Maz Kanata's bar, she is taken away to Starkiller Base for interrogation. As he did with Poe, Kylo uses the Force on Rey's mind in order to gain information. But instead, Rey pushes back and looks into Kylo's. He leaves in another frustrated mood, and Rey successfully mind-tricks her stormtrooper guard. Later on in the forest, Rey uses the Force to pull Luke's lightsaber toward her, even beating Kylo's force pull.

Compared to Star Wars: A New Hope, Rey seems to grasp what the Force is capable of much quicker than Luke. However, there are reasons to explain this. Firstly, when Kylo enters the minds of others, it's meant to be a kind of Force mind-meld that only Force users can do. However, unknowing that Rey is also a Force user, she was able to enter his mind and also gain information out of him. This means she could've seen the capabilities of the Force via Kylo, although it may not have been explained well in the scene.

To back up this idea of their merging minds, Star Wars: The Last Jedi has Snoke revealing that he's bridged the minds between Rey and Kylo, which may have even begun during this interrogation moment. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker only reinforces this idea, as Rey and Kylo are revealed to be a rare Dyad in the Force. This intense connection between the two could further explain how Rey gained knowledge of the Force from Kylo and why the mind-melding likely boosted her powers at the moment.

Also, it's important to remember that Rey is the daughter of a Palpatine clone. Meaning the likelihood is that, much like the Skywalker bloodline, her connection to the Force is far beyond the usual amount. Although this wouldn't explain how she knew about mind tricks and Force-pulls, it does explain how she mind-tricked her first stormtrooper after three attempts.

So, given Rey's heritage and bridging of minds, it's understandable how she understood the Force so quickly. However, it's debatable as to whether the Star Wars sequel trilogy as a whole explained this in the best and clearest way possible.
