The Star Wars movie franchise features a dazzling variety of characters of all sorts. Some are noble heroes, such as the legendary Luke Skywalker or his Jedi apprentice Rey, while others are corrupt criminals or crime lords, or brutal conquerors. Many of them are incredibly greedy, callous, or self-absorbed, caring nothing for the people around them.

In the original trilogy, the rogue Han Solo was sometimes criticized for being too fixated on money and for being self-centered, but at least Han has his heroic side, and he has risked his life for the sake of his friends and allies more than once. It can easily be said that many other Star Wars movie characters are much more selfish than he is, and often without redeeming qualities to balance things out.

10 Dryden Vos Will Do Anything To Get The Goods

Dryden Vos in solo a star wars story

Dryden Vos was a near-human alien who operated as the face of the Crimson Dawn crime organization, though the vengeful Darth Maul was the true master. Dryden Vos is a sharp dresser and can be polite, but he is also ruthless and quite greedy. He's a crime lord to the last.

Dryden won't hesitate to betray or kill anyone who fails him, and he very nearly killed Han Solo and Qi'ra over some coaxium. He died trying to get his hands on his prize, showing just how self-centered and greedy he was.

9 Sebulba Was Drunk On Fame & Glory

Sebulba in a podracer in The Phantom Menace.

A minor but memorable villain from The Phantom Menace is the alien Sebulba, a podracer jock who will cheat his way to victory every time. Sebulba is a typical arrogant athlete, coasting on his popularity and his fame while contributing nothing to the world aside from some brutal entertainment on the racetrack.

Sebulba really lives it up, and his scenes in Episode I made it clear that he was far too comfortable with this lifestyle. When he finally got his comeuppance at the hands of a young Anakin Skywalker, he simply threw a brief tantrum, outraged that the oh-so-great Sebulba had finally been beaten.

8 Watto Only Wants Real Money

watto in star wars

The flying alien Watto was another unsavory character whom the heroes met while stranded on Tatooine. Watto is a sly junk dealer who demands a lot from his customers, and he isn't terribly flexible about payment methods, either. Qui-Gon Jinn learned this the hard way.

Watto will only accept a deal if it's slanted in his favor, and when he lost a lot of money betting on Sebulba, he tried to back out of his deal with Qui-Gon, to avoid losing Anakin as his slave. Ultimately, though, Watto had to give in before Jabba the Hutt got involved.

7 Nute Gunray Was A Cowardly Conquerer

Nute Gunray wearing a headdress in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Nute Gunray of the Trade Federation was yet another selfish and unsavory character from The Phantom Menace, but not as a jock or trader. Instead, Nute Gunray was the viceroy who led the invasion of the innocent world Naboo, all on Darth Sidious' orders. He sent thousands of droids against Naboo's hapless defenders.

Nute, by nature, is incredibly greedy and paranoid, based on how Neimoidian parents raise their grub-like children (according to Legends lore), and that reflects heavily in how Nute operated. Later, when Padmé Amidala was in the Geonosis execution arena, Nute wanted her dead out of petty spite.

6 DJ Will Sell Anyone Out If He Gets A Better Offer

DJ the hacker in star wars

This crafty character appeared partway through The Last Jedi, a human hacker and thief who could waltz his way through any security system for the right price. He helped Finn and Rose escape Canto Bight, then (for a fee) helped them sneak aboard Supreme Leader Snoke's capital ship. Then he turned on them.

Like Han Solo, DJ follows the money, but unlike Han, DJ is cold and merciless about it, and he felt no remorse about leaving the betrayed Finn and Rose to their fate at Captain Phasma's hands. War is business, he said, and he won't take sides for idealistic reasons. Only monetary ones.

5 General Hux Wanted To Be The Boss So Badly

General Hux in the Star Wars sequel trilogy

One of the highest-ranked officers in the First Order was General Hux, who had a bit of a short temper and a lot of ambition. He was a typical villainous general to the end, and when Supreme Leader Snoke died, Hux wanted so badly to vill that power vacuum himself.

Hux was bitterly humbled when the mighty Kylo Ren got in the way, and later, Hux actually aided the Resistance, simply to get back at Kylo Ren (and he soon died). Over and over, Hux acted with only himself in mind.

4 Unkar Plutt Ran A Totaltarian Junk Trade Business On Jakku

unkar plutt star awars

The alien Unkar Plutt was the Watto of a new generation, and he was even greedier. At least Watto would agree to creative deals if something was in it for him, while Unkar Plutt is more like a petty crime lord. He single-handedly runs the junk trade on Jakku, making sure all profits go straight into his pockets.

Unkar is a bit stingy with the value of junk, only paying scavengers like Rey in bread packets. He also had the legendary Millennium Falcon in his collection, and wrongly claimed that it was his. Han Solo might disagree.

3 Jabba The Hutt Was A Notorious Gangster

Jabba the Hutt Tattooine

Few cinematic characters are more emblematic of grotesque greed, gluttony, and cruelty than Jabba the Hutt, who was an antagonist in Return of the Jedi. Jabba and his many bounty hunters and thugs terrorize the sands of Tatooine to keep people in line, and Jabba isn't afraid to torture or humiliate his enemies.

Jabba is determined to be Tatooine's #1 power player at any cost, and in the comics, in particular, he kept collecting water from the desperate citizens even during a harsh drought (by Tatooine standards). It seems Jabba is determined to chow down on every last morsel and treasure on Tatooine.

2 Lady Proxima Is The Jabba Of Corellia

A close-up of Lady Proxima with her mouth open

The world of Corellia is a major center for starship production and sales, but not everyone here is getting rich off of that business. Desperate youths such as Han Solo and Qi'ra end up working for Lady Proxima and her White Worms criminal gang, and Proxima will tolerate no failures.

Lady Proxima was ready to kill Han for failing to deliver some goods, and she gives her young minions little more than token food and shelter in exchange for the many criminal acts they carry out on her behalf. She's no saint, just an arrogant crime lord.

1 Greedo Wanted A Huge Bribe To Spare Han's Life

Greedo confronts Han Solo in Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope

In A New Hope, Han Solo ran afoul of the Rodian bounty hunter Greedo, who was operating on behalf of Jabba the Hutt. Why target Han? Earlier, Han had dropped his valuable cargo once an Imperial star destroyer got too close, and Jabba would not be happy to see Han show up empty-handed.

Greedo had Han cornered, but he made an offer: if Han gave him all the money or even the Millenium Falcon, then Greedo would leave Han alone, and pretend that they never met. It's a selfish move, and amusingly, this alien's name actually has "greed" in it. Greedo is a typical money-grubbing thug in Jabba's employ, nothing more.
