General Grievous was a feared Separatist commander and one of the greatest threats the Jedi encountered in the prequel Star Wars series. Trained by the nefarious Count Dooku, his cybernetic body allowed him to account for many of the limitations his absence in the Force created.

As a result, this makes him an intriguing and distinct fighter for many of the series' characters (hero and villain alike) to contend against. By matching him with a diverse number of opponents, one can accurately assess the strengths and limitations at the brutal commander's disposal.

10 Could Beat: Kit Fisto

Kit Fisto was a member of the Jedi Council and an active participant in the Clone Wars. He was especially talented at aquatic missions on account of his unique bodily physiology (and since lightsabers would accommodate such a terrain).

Even after Grievous had murdered Fisto's padawan before his own eyes, Fisto was unwilling to complete their battle against one another outside of Grievous' lair, fleeing on his spacecraft instead. This was most likely because he acknowledged himself as an inferior opponent, even despite his extensive knowledge in the ways of the Force.

9 Would Lose To: Mace Windu

Mace Windu uses his purple lightsaber against Palpatine

Mace Windu was debatably the most powerful member of the Jedi Council. Balancing the light and dark sides of the Force, he was the only character in the entire Star Wars universe to have ever defeated Lord Sidious on even terms and by himself (as Rey required the spirits of fallen jedi to increase her own strength).

Having been responsible for the Separatist's iconic cough through crushing his lungs with the Force, the Council member is experienced in breaching his opponent's defenses. This entails that he is the perfect candidate in beating the cyborg once and for all.

8 Could Beat: Jango Fett

Jango Fett backed by an army of clones in Star Wars

Jango Fett was a seasoned bounty hunter and the genetic template for the clones. This speaks to his extensive skills as a soldier, especially since his duplicates— legendarily skilled in their own regard— are degenerated copies of himself.

However, Grievous has never demonstrated an inability to block blaster fire (when he is expecting it, unlike his fight against Obi-Wan Kenobi). Should he spin his sabers in an impenetrable rotation, Fett's only alternative would be to use his flamethrowers. In doing so, he would come within range for the General to cut him down instantly.

7 Would Lose To: Anakin Skywalker

Anakin Skywalker Star Wars

Superficially, it might be reasonable to assume Grievous could defeat Anakin. The former Jedi's reckless attacks would play directly into the General's hands, with the Separatist capitalizing on his opponent's overconfidence.

However, considering that Anakin was able to overcome and slay Ventress (and the Sith's own victory over Grievous during his attack on the Night Sisters' home planet), it follows that Skywalker's swordsmanship should be adequate enough to win the battle. Despite his advantage in ability, it is nonetheless essential for him to be mindful of his surroundings; Grievous is notorious for his underhanded tactics.

6 Could Beat: Durge

Durge has a considerable edge over Grievous on account of his ability to regenerate. He was so resilient that he only perished by being thrown into lava.

However, Grievous has encountered (and bested) the alien once before, striking him down during a test Dooku had arranged to gauge his skills and whether or not he would make for a capable droid commander. Subsequently, the strength the separatist wields overshadows the healing capacity of his lesser known metallic counterpart.

5 Would Lose To: Yoda

Yoda was a grandmaster of the Jedi Council, evincing his skills and ability as a warrior. Though he may not have been able to explicitly defeat Palpatine as Windu had, his dexterity and stolid disposition would provide tremendous boons against his cybernetic opposition.

He prefers to use his surroundings to defeat his opponents (proven through his battle against Sidious and Dooku), showcasing a wide range of attacks by which to surprise Grievous and catch him off guard. Considering how proficiently he handled a massive stone column, it follows that he could crush his foe's body with similar success.

4 Could Beat: Savage Opress

Darth Maul's brother, Savage Opress wielding a dual lightsaber.

The brother of Darth Maul, Savage Opress relied primarily on his brute strength and unprecedented aggression to defeat his foes. He was capable of plowing through several columns of clone troopers with little effort and withstood multiple concentrated blasts of Dooku's force lightning.

However, his sloppy swordsmanship has debilitated him in his battles against the Jedi and Sidious, usually hoping to wear his opponents down through the power of his body. Since Grievous is one of the few characters even stronger than he is (able to dent a bomber with his bare hands), it follows that Opress's tactics would not find success against the droid commander.

3 Would Lose To: Lord Sidious

Darth Sidious wielding his red lightsabers in The Clone Wars

Lord Sidious was the undisputed master of the Sith and one of the most skilled fighters in the entire Star Wars universe. He fought with trickery, speed, and guile, expediently cutting down many Jedi faster than Grievous could in his most charitable iteration (and against lower ranking opponents).

Further, the Senator has proven deadly enough to overcome physically dominant targets through his successes against Maul and Savage. Therefore, it concludes he would find a weakness in Grievous' offensive, exploiting it and killing him instantly.

2 Could Beat: Cad Bane

Cad Bane was a skilled and resourceful bounty hunter, one who had made even the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi struggle against him. His vast arsenal would force Grievous to think on his feet, inevitably catching him off guard.

However, the General's impervious armor is resistant to blaster fire and other similarly potent attacks, proven through his many encounters against the clones and even the Gungans. While Bane may be able to defend himself in close quarters through what knowledge he has of lightsabers, the mercenary could not match his quarry's speed or ferocity.

1 Would Lose To: Dooku

count-dooku

Count Dooku was a masterful Sith Lord. He was able to defeat Obi-Wan Kenobi despite Anakin's assistance in a matter of seconds during Revenge Of The Sith, proving how much his skill eclipses Grievous's own (on account of the General's subsequent loss to the same opponent).

Further, Dooku is privy to the Separatist's tactics since he was directly responsible for training him. As a result, he would be able to maneuver around his former student with little difficulty as he carved him to shreds.
