God of War Art Director Raf Grassetti shared an illustration of Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Maul wielding a red lightsaber in one hand and the Darksaber in the other.

"I've always wanted to do this piece and even though Maul is not showing up on Mandalorian any mention of him would make me happy," the artist wrote on Twitter. "Mandalorian S2 already blew my mind. I'm really hyped for where this is going, I want to do Ahsoka Tano this weekend. This Is The Way."

Grassetti also shared a shot of the preliminary sculpture. "Here is a shot of the sculpt. Cheers guys," he wrote.

Darth Maul (played by Ray Park and voiced by Peter Serafinowicz) — or simply Mual after he left the Sith — made his debut in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. He starts off as Darth Sidious' (Ian McDiarmid) first known apprentice and wields a double-bladed lightsaber. After killing Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), Maul is supposedly killed by Jinn's Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor). However, in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Maul (this time voiced by Sam Witwer) is revealed to have survived and clashes with both the Jedi and the Sith. He later returns for several episodes of Star Wars Rebels and was revealed to be the mastermind behind the plot of Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The history of the Darksaber begins with its creator, the Mandalorian/ Jedi known as Tarre Vizsla. Following Tarre's death, the saber was stolen by Mandalorians. Years later, during Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Darksaber fell into the hands of Maul after he won it in a duel with Pre Vizsla. In Star Wars Rebels, the sword found its way to Sabine Wren, another Mandalorian, and Kanan Jarrus. Wren gave it to fellow Mandalorian, Bo-Katan Kryze, who was the last person to have it before it was seen in the hands of The Mandalorian's Moff Gideon.

While Grassetti may not get his wish to see Maul on The Mandalorian, the new season has already featured the live-action TV debuts of several beloved Star Wars characters, including Temuera Morrison's Boba Fett and Timothy Olyphant's Cobb Vanth. Other familiar faces that are expected to appear include Rosario Dawson's Ahsoka Tano and Katee Sackhoff's Bo-Katan Kryze.
