A new book that shares a wealth of Star Wars facts has revealed George Lucas's original plans for Luke Skywalker in his version of Episode VIII.

According to Lucasfilm Creative Executive Pablo Hidalgo's Star Wars: Fascinating Facts, Lucas's 2012 treatment "also had Episode VIII be the one wherein Luke Skywalker would die." His treatments were written years before the development and production of The Last Jedi got underway, and although they were presented to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Disney for consideration, both parties decided against them.

The Last Jedi released in 2017 to both critical and commercial acclaim, though it wasn't without its detractors, with some fans taking issue with the film's handling of certain characters, including Luke Skywalker. Skywalker actor Mark Hamill has previously shared his thoughts on the film's handling, including the demise of his beloved fan-favorite character.
