Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures focuses on the adventures of SF-R3 "Aree" as he travels throughout the galaxy studying different creatures for the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts, but exactly when in the timeline his adventures occur has not been made clear. However, a return to a key Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back location gives a clue as to when Aree might be traveling.

In the fifth episode, “Wampa,” Aree travels to Hoth to care for a sick wampa. While the episode is overall one of the series’ most heartwarming thus far despite the Wampa’s dangerous nature, the location is particularly interesting because it establishes that Aree is traveling after Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and also implies that the Wampa has retaken Echo Base as its lair.

A Wampa in Star Wars Forces of Destiny

This development is not very surprising. Deleted footage from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back includes more Wampa scenes then aired in the actual film. On Disney+, most of this footage is collected under the "Wampa Attacks" deleted scene. First, a Wampa is shown through the ice on the wall as Han and Leia argue about Han leaving. Then, the Wampa rampages, even trapping R2-D2 at one point. Finally, C-3PO removes a Wampa warning sign from a door, causing at least one unlucky Snowtrooper to fall prey to a Wampa attack. These scenes collectively show that in the original plans for the movie Wampas were meant to be more of a menace to the rebels at Echo Base.

The extended influence of the Wampas on the rebels at Echo Base is elaborated upon in Star Wars Forces of Destiny. In "Beasts of Echo Base," Chewbacca goes missing, and Leia finds him being used as an unwilling teddy bear for a sleeping Wampa. Leia is able to distract the Wampa while Chewie escapes, and working together, Chewie and R2-D2 seal the door, keeping the base safe. This episode ties in with the deleted footage, but the episode and the deleted scenes also make another possibility clear: Echo Base might have been a wampa's lair before the Rebel Alliance arrived.

In Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures' "Wampa," the Wampa seems to have made itself at home in what appears to be the ruins of Echo Base. This location gives viewers a possible time period for the show or at least some of Aree's travels; it clearly takes place post Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. This time period makes sense because a Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts probably would not have been supported during the Empire, but in the post-Empire era, such a society would have thrived.

SF-R3 Aree hangs from the ceiling of Echo Base as the Wampa seems poised to attack in Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures

Throughout the episode, the base is clearly being retaken by nature and repurposed by the Wampa to be its home. In the background of the lair, multiple computer terminals and viewscreens are visible, frozen over and broken. The technology is not functional and Aree never comments on any of it, but the ruins are still visible throughout Aree's attempts to help ease the Wampa's illness.

At the end of the episode, after Aree has helped cure the Wampa's cold, Aree is suspended from the ceiling in a callback to Luke Skywalker's capture by the Wampa in the film. The "fun fact" at the end of the episode explains that "Wampas like to hang their prey from the ceiling until they are ready to feast, turning their cave into one giant refrigerator." While Aree is in peril, the danger level is mild since Aree is a droid and therefore unlikely to be truly appetizing to the Wampa.

Echo Base was once a home for the Rebellion, but Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures shows that it is now the Wampa's lair and "giant refrigerator." This development gives an approximate time period for the series as a whole. Deleted footage and "Beasts of Echo Base" also indicate that Echo Base may have originally been the Wampa’s territory before the Rebellion decided to go to Hoth. Thus, after the Rebellion was forced to evacuate, the Wampa may simply have reclaimed what was theirs.
