RUMOR: Star Wars: Episode IX Features a New Superweapon For Kylo Ren

A new rumor suggests that Kylo Ren and the First Order will be working on a brand new superweapon in Star Wars: Episode IX.

According to Express, the leak, which originally came from Mike Zeroh on Youtube, revealed, "...A description of Kylo Ren inside his throne room, assumed to be the headquarters of the First Order, viewing a holgram [sic] form [sic] a device held in his hand. Kylo appears to be examining three large superweapons that are in a cyllindrical [sic] shape with an enormous engine on each side of each superweapon of this ship/weapon, destroying terrain on a planet. The engine burner is coloured red and the blast from the bottom of these three massive weapons is coloued [sic] blue, impacting a surface causing astronomical destruction. Parts of the weapon seem to be under consruction [sic] and not finished."

The article then noted that a commentator suggested the weapons in question could be World Devastators, which played a role in Dark Horse's Dark Empire comics.

This leak should be taken with a grain of salt, as it comes from an unnamed source. Weapons similar to the World Devastators could factor into the film, but that remains to be seen. Plus, even this description admits that the weapons in the hologram may be under construction, so they might only play a minor role in the film. However, superweapons have played a major role in a lot of Star Wars films, so it shouldn't come as a surprise if Episode IX actually does feature a superweapon.

In August, J.J. Abrams sent out a tweet marking the start of production on Episode IX. Although little is known about the film, it will be the final movie in the Star Wars trilogy that started in 2015 with The Force Awakens.

Star Wars Legends is the name given to the (now-defunct) Expanded Universe. There are decades' worth of stories and characters introduced in Lucasfilm-approved novels, comic books and games. The first novel released was 1978's Splinter of the Mind’s Eye. However, following Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm, it was declared that, outside of the franchise films and certain other works like Star Wars: The Clone Wars, any licensed material created before April 25, 2014, was no longer considered canon, and would instead be placed under the Legends umbrella.

Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: Episode IX stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film is scheduled to open on Dec. 20, 2019.

Update: A previous version of this article explained Splinter of the Mind's Eye's place in Star Wars history unclearly. This article has been amended for clarity.
