The Rise of Skywalker is not only the final entry in the ongoing sequel trilogy, but the final entry in the nine-film, mainline Star Wars saga. The "Skywalker Saga" began with the original Star Wars trilogy -- which ran from 1977 to 1983 -- and the prequel trilogy -- which ran from 1999 to 2005.

In addition to being the ninth film in the main saga, The Rise of Skywalker is also the 11th live-action Star Wars film to hit cinemas, including the anthology films Rogue One and Solo. Counting the 2008 animated feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars (which preceded the animated television series of the same name), it is the 12th theatrical Star Wars release overall.

The Rise of Skywalker is billed as the definitive end to the nine-film "Skywalker Saga." Set a year after the events of 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the film rejoins the trinity of Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron as the Resistance's war against Kylo Ren's First Order continues. Meanwhile, the ubiquitous conflict between the Jedi and the Sith comes to a conclusive head.
