WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Marvel's Star Wars #1, by Charles Soule, Jesús Saiz, Arif Prianto and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

The Millennium Falcon was owned by Lando Calrissian before rising to legendary status under the captaincy of Han Solo. However, by the time of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the modified YT-1300 light freighter was gathering dust on Jakku before being used by Rey and Finn to escape the First Order. While Chewbacca is indisputably heir to the ship following Han's death in that film, the Falcon was captained in the sequel trilogy first by Rey and then, in The Rise of Skywalker, by Poe Dameron.

But, now, in Marvel's Star Wars #1, we discover the vessel had another captain, following the events of The Empire Strikes Back. It wasn't previous owner Lando Calrissian, however; it was Leia Organa.

The series picks up aboard the Falcon immediately following the escape from Cloud City, with Luke Skywalker traumatized by the loss of his hand and the revelation that Darth Vader is his father. With their ship pursued by the Empire, Lando insists they head to an unknown star system where they won't be detected. However, Leia immediately makes it clear that she's in command.

Chewie is just fine with that, because he blames Lando for betraying them to Darth Vader, who then handed over Han to Boba Fett and Jabba the Hut. Like a true leader, Leia orders the Falcon to rendezvous with the Rebel fleet, because there are lives at stake.

As expected, the fleet is under attack by the Empire, leading Leia to use the Falcon to cut a path for the other vessels to make the jump to hyperspace by taking down a Star Destroyer (due, in large part, to Luke). The strategy reinforces why Leia went on to become general and lead the Resistance in the wake of Return of the Jedi.

Leia confident and in control; unlike Han, she's not prone to improvisation. With Chewie as her co-pilot and Lando under her command (granted, he's more or less a prisoner), Leia has the crew she needs for the missions ahead. She has the respect of everyone when they convene at a Rebel council, where her superiors and peers are worried about Vader's ability to crack codes and track the fleet.

But Leia is undeterred, because she knows she has Luke by her side, and soldiers willing to die for the cause. She isn't about to run -- she's there to fight. It something we see again, decades later, when she briefly took command of the Falcon once more, in the wake of Han's death.
