WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #12 by Alyssa Wong, Minkyu Jung, Victor Olazaba, Joe Caramagna and Rachelle Rosenberg, on sale now.

During her relatively short time in the Star Wars universe, Doctor Aphra has crossed paths with some of the galaxy's greatest players. She has gone head-to-head with countless criminal syndicates and even helped Luke and the Rebellion handle some dangerous alien symbiotes. Her most impressive relationship comes from the darker side of the galaxy. Doctor Aphra has acquired the rare achievement of betraying Darth Vader on two separate occasions, but this has left her fearful for her life.

Aphra has recently been performing odds and ends for Domina Tagge and the Tagge Company. After discovering Domina's cousin dead aboard a cruiser, Aphra and Sana Starros were directed towards Jekara. Tagge tasked them with a mission to obtain as much information as possible on Crimson Dawn and any other rival organization attending the auction for Han Solo. Aphra was originally excited to go to the galaxy's most premier event but her attitude changed when she saw who was attending.

Since Aphra had created an extraordinarily long list of enemies in the seedier side of the galaxy, she felt it was best if she was cloaked. The Black Suns or the Hutts did not make Aphra nervous. The sight of Sly Moore, one of Emperor Palpatine's generals, brought out Aphra's anxiety. This would become drastically worse when Vader himself strolled onto the auction floor. The sight of Vader sent Aphra into a full-on panic attack. In an effort to get away from the area and not draw attention to herself, Aphra's nerves proved to be too strong. She was sent flying to the floor and the slam of a transmitter brought Vader's attention to her. There's still hope for Aphra though since Vader has not realized who she is yet.

It might seem like Vader would not concern himself with the likes of an archaeologist, but Aphra has achieved the rare feat of betraying Vader multiple times. She was initially hired by Darth Vader in Star Wars: Darth Vader #3 by Kieron Gillen, Salvadore Larroca, Edgar Delgado and Joe Caramagna. Vader tasked Aphra with building an entire army of droids for him. She became part of his inner circle and the pair traveled across the galaxy together. Unfortunately, holes began to form in their partnership and Aphra became worried for her life.

This led her to approach Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Darth Vader #25 by Gillen, Larroca, Delgado and Max Fiumara. She tried to snitch on Vader by informing Palpatine of their various adventures across the galaxy. This blew up in her face. Palpatine was impressed by Vader's initiative and put Aphra back in his possession. Vader led Aphra to an airlock where she begged for her life. He had promised her that if he killed her it would be by his lightsaber to save her the pain. Her disobedience caused Vader to attempt to kill her in a way that she feared most -- suffocation in space. Luckily, she was saved by Black Krrsantan before she could die.

Doctor Aphra ejected into space by Vader

Aphra would find herself back under Vader's command after revealing an assassination attempt to the Emperor in Doctor Aphra #35 by Simon Spurrier, Andrea Broccardo, Marc Deering, Scott Hanna and Caramagna. This partnership would prove to be much shorter, as Vader had absolutely zero trust in Doctor Aphra. Aphra felt she could win favor with Vader by discovering the Rebels' secret base and was able to locate Hoth for the Empire. Aphra never led Vader to the base but instead directed him to a different area of the planet. Here she betrayed Vader yet again and deleted the records from the probe droids on the planet. She then escaped and has kept out of Vader's crosshairs until Crimson Dawn's auction for Han Solo.

Darth Vader will not hesitate to kill Aphra if presented the opportunity. During their last partnership, he was waiting for any excuse to kill her. The only thing preventing him in the first place was the Emperor's fond opinion of Aphra for preventing his assassination. Vader has learned quite a bit about Aphra and can use his knowledge to bring infinite suffering. Aphra knows this as well, which explains why the sight of Vader sent her into a horrific panic attack. Now she has to find a way to escape the auction and avoid Vader if she can recover from her panic-driven fall.
