The Skywalker Saga is about to come to an end. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker is set to close out a 40-year saga, which will then allow Disney to usher in a new wave of stories in a galaxy far, far away. There are a plethora of fans who have had issues with the new trilogy of films, starting with The Force Awakens. Some fans believed The Force Awakens lacked originality or that The Last Jedi ruined their perceptions of Luke Skywalker as a pure hero, and there have been a number of complaints since Disney took hold of the franchise. The films have their high points and equally low points, but the same can be said for the non-canonical Expanded Universe.

The Expanded Universe is comprised of novels, comics, and some visual entertainment that were mostly released prior to Disney’s buyout of Lucasfilms. There are stories in the Expanded Universe that are universally loved by fans, such as the birth of Ben Skywalker to Luke and Mara Jade. Then, there are instances where the stories wildly missed the mark, such as the creation of the evil clone Luke Skywalker. The EU is filled with a long list of colorful creations, and here is our list of the five characters we wished made it into Disney’s Star Wars canon, and five we could do without.

10 MARA JADE (INCLUDE)

The wife of Luke Skywalker was at first a villain. Mara Jade began as the Emperor's Hand, which is an assassin that was trained under Palpatine. After the death of Palpatine, Mara was instructed to kill Luke Skywalker. Instead, she went rogue and became a smuggler as the Galactic Empire caved in on itself. Mara met Luke when Grand Admiral Thrawn threatened to plunge the galaxy back into darkness.

They worked together (begrudgingly) for a time, and a romantic relationship budded from their mutual respect for one another after some time. The two had a child together, Ben Skywalker, and battled the reemergence of the Sith for years before her nephew, Jacen Solo, killed her after he was seduced by the Dark Side. Mara was one of the most powerful Jedi in the EU, and was both gorgeous and intelligent.

9 YUUZHAN VONG (INCLUDE)

The Yuuzhan Vong are among the most deadly enemies ever created in the EU. These beings originate from outside of the known galaxy, so little was understood about them when they decided to invade. They were responsible for the deaths of hundreds of trillions of people during their war with the New Republic after their invasion.

The Yuuzhan Vong were deeply religious villains who viewed technology as blasphemous. All of their ships, weapons, armor, and gadgets are organic. These creatures are also unable to be sensed by the Force, which aided them in dismantling several Jedi and the planets they protected.

8 PRINCE XIZOR (INCLUDE)

After Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader, Prince Xizor is considered the most influential villainous being in the galaxy. Xizor was the head of the Black Sun, an intricate and powerful criminal organization that would make the Hutt’s look like child’s play. He was also was born as royalty to the wealthy Falleen family of the House Sizhran.

Xizor amassed enough wealth to place him in a separate league of his own, both feared and respected by the Republic and the Empire. After the fall of the Empire, Xizor was chased from his palace in Courrasnt by the New Republic. He was able to reattain power through his criminal enterprises and remained a highly powerful overlord throughout most of his time in the EU.

7 KYLE KATARN (INCLUDE)

Featured as the main protagonist in the Star Wars: Dark Forces and Jedi Knight video games, Kyle Katarn is a former Imperial soldier who turned into a Jedi Knight. In the EU, he was involved in the original plans to steal the Death Star schematics. Katarn's father was murdered by the Sith, but he assumed the Republic to be behind the killing.

This led Katarn down a dark path until he discovered the truth. Sometime later, the young warrior learned of his force-sensitive nature and began to train as a Jedi. He ascended to the role of a Jedi master and was monumental in the war against the Yuuzhan Vong.

6 EXAR KUN (INCLUDE)

Star Wars' Exar Kun standing before a pyramid among a lightning storm

Exar Kun was a Jedi Knight who joined the dark side and became one of the most powerful Sith of all time. He was heavily involved in the Old Sith Wars and his origins and connection to the Sith Amulet are the basis to the backstory of The Knights Of The Old Republic games.

After ultimately losing the war, Kun separated his soul from his body (much like a Force ghost) in his Yavin 4 Jedi temple in order to remain immortal. Several thousand years later, Luke built a temple on Yavin 4 and his pupils were attacked by the spirit of Kun before he was finally defeated.

5 CARNOR JAX (NOT INCLUDE)

Carnor Jax was an Imperial Protector who was tasked as a bodyguard to the emperor. Clad in the familiar red mask and armor of the Emperor's guard, Jax remained loyal to the dark side after his master perished. Jax wanted the throne for himself though, and orchestrated the murder of the rest of the guards.

He also made sure to murder every last one of Palpatine's clones that surfaced after he was killed, securing a clear path to the throne. Jax trained as a Sith, but his stories were always lackluster. His villainy seemed forced and his plans to succeed Palpatine on the throne felt unoriginal and uninspired.

4 BELDORION (NOT INCLUDE)

beldorion hutt

A Hutt with a lightsaber is ridiculous. Beldorion was a Hutt trained as a Jedi, and he severed the light side of the force for hundreds of years. As expected, the Hutt fell to the dark side and asserted his rule over the planet Nam Chorios. He remained there as the planet's supreme leader until he was later bested in a lightsaber battle with Leia Organa.

If this entire story seems laughable, that's because it is. Beldorion's story is considered one of the worst in the EU, notably due to the fact that somehow the Jedi trusted a Hutt with the secrets of their order.

3 SKIPPY THE DROID (NOT INCLUDED)

skippy droid force

Skippy the Droid, whose real name is R5-D4, can use the Force.  He isn't a super cool warrior droid though, in fact, he is seen using the force to stop drinks from spilling. Skippy serves drinks to Jabba the Hutt as a service droid, and uses his power to make sure he does his job well.  Skippy is actually the droid that malfunctioned when Luke Skywalker and his uncle Lars are looking at droids in A New Hope.

Skippy knew, via a force vision, that R2D2 was important and noted that if Luke and Lars chose him instead, the galaxy would be doomed. So he self-destructed his core (as seen in the movie) so that Lars and Luke were forced to pick R2-D2 instead. Although he did appear in the canonical Star Wars films, his use of the force and his reasoning for self-destructing are stories completely left in the EU. Where they should stay.

2 TRICLOPS (NOT INCLUDED)

Triclops was a mutated mastermind who claimed that he was the son of Emperor Palpatine. He had three eyes, as his name implies. Triclops was trained to be an Emperor's Eye, but his father considered him a failure and cast him aside in imprisonment. While in prison, Triclops had a child with Kendalina, a former Jedi.

Not long after, he escaped and joined the Rebel Alliance in spite of his father. Triclops would help the New Republic as much as he could, although they never fully trusted him. The idea that Palpatine would have a son, a triclops at that, and then abandon him was not received well by many fans.

1 LUUKE SKYWALKER  (NOT INCLUDED)

Luuke Skywalker was an evil clone that was grown from the hand Luke lost battling Darth Vader on Cloud City. Adding an extra "U" to his name was supposed to be a clever way of differentiating the two Lukes, but it came off as very messy. Luke's lightsaber was also recovered, and it was given to the evil clone.

Another clone with an extra "U," Jedi Master Joruus C'baoth, trained Luuke in the ways of the dark side. He tracked down his counterpart and battled the real Luke to a stalemate; both men were equally matched. It was Mara Jade that ended up slipping into the battle and killing the evil Luuke and ending the ridiculous existence of the clone with the extra "U."
