The Star Wars universe has been one of the most iconic sci-fi franchises in the world, and with good reason. Between an amazing story, wonderful effects and its astounding actors and crew, it was a lively story that soon became the favorite of thousands. Part of bringing those characters to life is making sure that their settings and costumes keep your eyes peeled to the screen and on the journey to space while a great big war is raging. Alongside the actor’s ability to embody that character, their costume has to match the occasion.

Star Wars has had some of the most beautiful costumes in all of Hollywood, but not all of them have been top quality. While many of these costumes were lavish and beautiful, or maybe simple and clean, there were many that just stood out in the worst way. Whether it was because they just didn’t fit the character or because it was odd looking, they couldn’t all be winners when there were also equally beautiful designs that splashed on screen. We’ve decided to find some of the best costumes that we’ve loved from the series and some that we could, in all honesty, do without. Here are 10 costume changes we love, and 10 we hate!

20 LIKE: ORIGINAL LEIA TO GENERAL LEIA

Leia has always been beautiful, and every Star Wars fan has a special place in their heart for the princess of Alderaan and her actress, Carrie Fisher. Her looks have been iconic for the franchise, especially her beloved hair buns and famous white dress. She doesn’t do too much with her original look and yet you can tell that she’s both a leader of her people and a person of action. So when the new section of the franchise was announced, we had to wonder what the design would be now that she was older.

We weren’t disappointed, as yet again, the design for her was fitting and made her look extremely mature. We see Fisher in a variety of outfits, but her regular shirt and vest was something different for her. She wasn’t wearing dresses, but rather something she could move in -- you could tell she was ready to do whatever it took to help the rebellion. And her hair was still up in a bun that recalled the older, iconic hairstyle. She dresses the part for this incredible role she’s taking on and the extensive journey against her very own son. It was a good choice and fitting for her character.

19 DISLIKE: ORIGINAL HAN TO SOLO

We all love Han Solo -- he’s a scoundrel you can’t really get mad at because he’s loveable in his own way. Besides, he has Chewbacca on his side, and no one really wants to get on the wrong side of that furball. The new movie’s release has stunned lots of Star Wars fans, but that doesn’t mean this was going to be easy to pull off. With a recast of older and beloved characters, it was bound to get a little bit of backlash. Unfortunately, we just weren’t that big of fans when it came to his new outfit.

Han is always wearing some kind of jacket of vest, but usually his color scheme is still a bit brighter than the new look that features a darker hue. That and he looks a bit more mature than the original Harrison Ford’s look gave off -- he looked like he could charm you out of your shoes before you’d ever really notice. This isn’t so much because of actor change as much as they looked like they were trying to freshen up the original design, which we think is something that didn’t really need to be changed in the first place. But despite this, we still love Han and we’ll probably go see the movie again!

18 LIKE: ANAKIN TO DARTH VADER

The most iconic and classic of all costume (and character) changes. In the original movies, we never really got to see much of Anakin’s true face, except for the very last time we ever see Darth Vader without his helmet. He is one of the most classic villains in all of cinematic history, so it only stands to reason that he has one of the best costumes we’ve ever seen. It’s intricate while also fitting the theme; it looks like something a space villain in a sci fi would wear.

What’s great about this costume is all the intricate parts Vader’s suit has -- each piece has a reason, although some of them we don’t see. Because we see Anakin get horribly burned, we know that the suit is essentially what keeps him alive. It holds together his body, the iconic mask not only looks menacing, but it helps him breathe, see and speak normally because of how severe the damage to his body was. While we don’t see those things right away, in the prequel films, we now see why Anakin was so deformed in the first place and, at the end of the original films, we finally see Vader’s deformed face at the end and his obvious struggle.

17 DISLIKE: ORIGINAL LUKE TO FORCE AWAKENS LUKE

Luke Skywalker has never been one for fancy clothing. When we’re first introduced to this simple farm boy, we notice that he doesn’t have many personal items and that most of his family is in very plain clothing. It’s indicative of his character, but more than that it shows his humility and social standing. What’s interesting about his traditional dress is that it isn’t far off from what most of the Jedi end up wearing, despite not having a cloak.

That being said, when The Force Awakens came out and we finally got to see Luke at the very end of the film, this wasn’t really what we were expecting. Luke went through less costume changes than most of the other characters, but this was sort of dramatic. Surely, he’d stuck with a humble appearance, although now he looked more like he was adorning a traditional Jedi outfit. That being said, between his humble robes and the mess of hair, Luke looks like he’s going through a hard time. Certainly, he’s been on that island for a long time, but the hermit look just isn’t all that flattering on him. We get that he’s made some mistakes, at perhaps from the storyline perspective it makes sense, but that doesn’t mean that we’re loving the look.

16 LIKE: ORIGINAL HAN TO THE FORCE AWAKENS HAN

Even though we're not so crazy about Han’s look in the Solo: A Star Wars Story look, it doesn’t mean we didn’t appreciate his all-grown up appearance in The Force Awakens. He may still have been running away from his problems or from being forced to help with galactic family issues, it really looked like Han had grown up and that he had some wisdom to pass along. Still wearing a nice jacket, he actually seems to have buttoned up his shirt for once -- we’re pretty sure Chewbacca is proud of him, even if he did raise is son to be a new kind of evil.

There were fairly minor changes to how they gave off Han’s appearance. Now that he’s a bit older, he has more of that unshaved, exhausted look. You would be too if you had to raise Kylo Ren, that’s not exactly an easy job when he decides it’s time to rule the galaxy. Much like Leia, they’ve given him an appearance that tells us he’s still a troublemaker, but also done with the Skywalker family drama. It’s unfortunate that we’ll never get to see another version of Han, but we’re glad his last appearance was a good one.

15 DISLIKE: TATOOINE PADME TO ATTACK OF THE CLONES PADME

Padme has had a variety of amazing outfits, but these two weren’t exactly our favorites. While it’s hard for her to look bad in literally anything, these were simply not winners amongst the many other fabulous costume designs that were made for her character. The biggest reason for this is because we see her often wearing lavish clothing -- whether that’s her stand in or the real her. Even when she’s portrayed as one of the handmaids, she still has a very certain look about here that’s really lavish.

In Attack of the Clones, she wears this white suit, complete with a cloak and her hair in the bun. In a lot of ways, she actually looks a little like Leia in this costume which is very lovely to think of the connection between them. That being said, it just isn’t one of her finer outfit, and we know she has some pretty amazing ones. It’s certainly practical, but often times when fans remember this outfit, they remember it after it was ripped by a vicious alien looking for blood. Somehow, it made a clean cut to turn it into a crop top, which just made it a little out there considering it was a choice to make it look like that on the costume team’s part.

14 DISLIKE: THE FORCE AWAKENS SNOKE TO THE LAST JEDI SNOKE

No one knew who this new mastermind was going to be behind the First Order. Surely, after someone as creepy and disheveled like Emperor Palpatine, otherwise known as Darth Sidious, we’d need a new villain to compare. The first look at Snoke that we got in The Force Awakens made him seem both mysterious and ultimately creepy. Not only was he sitting in a dark room where no one could truly see the details of his face, but he was a giant and insanely intimidating. After seeing him fully in The Last Jedi, we sort of wish they’d kept the lights off.

Snoke certainly has an uneasy face -- we’re not entirely sure what he is other than the fact that he certainly isn’t a human. We’re also not sure if the scars on his face are from his backstory or simply a part of his species look, but we do know that he became much less intimidating in the following movie. In particular, it was the lavish gold outfit they placed him in. It’s hard to tell what his robe really looks like when we first see him, but once you find out it’s a golden color it doesn’t really fit the theme of “evil” that villains before him have often adorned.

13 LIKE: ORIGINAL EMPEROR PALPATINE TO PREQUEL PALPATINE

When we first meet the fearsome Darth Sidious, it’s hard to see him any other way besides creepy. He has the eyes of a Sith and is sickly looking under the darkness of his cloak -- a regular, traditional villain that hits all the creepy spots he’s supposed to. This original costume is perfect and really sets the mood for the series. That being said, when the prequels came out and we finally saw Darth Sidious as Emperor Palpatine, and things go even weirder. For once, we didn’t see him as this pale, creepy guy but rather, a regular man.

One of the scariest things a villain can do is look like anyone else. They’re hard to point out in a crowd because they look just like everyone else. And this is how Sidious did it in the first place while he whispered in the ears of his fellow senators. Despite looking like your average space human, he was still evil and there was something about him between the way he dressed and the way his actor portrayed him that really sold us on his entire getup and told us that he was definitely a bad dude. At the end of the day, you can see this guy wearing a dark hood and executing Order 66.

12 LIKE: THE FORCE AWAKENS REY TO THE LAST JEDI REY

Rey has only been here for two movies and already her wardrobe is seriously rocking our worlds. Rey was a really big deal because, for once, we see a Force user that isn’t a part of the Skywalker family trying to save the galaxy from certain doom. She’s been confirmed to be from no special bloodlines, which makes her special in her own way. We loved her first outfit that, much like a Jedi look, which was very simple and humble looking. It makes sense considering she lived in the middle of practically nowhere.

But her three buns became an iconic look for her, not to mention they were way easier to replicate compared to some of the other women’s hairstyles in Star Wars. It obviously changed to a bit more of a half-up, half-down sort of style in her more recent film -- a look which we also love. Her new look was a little different as we see her wardrobe actually get a little darker with a new shade of gray rather than a whiteish beige. What’s interesting about this is that there are a lot of theories that Rey could be a Gray Jedi, those who walk in between the light. Color could be very important when considering her role in this new story.

11 DISLIKE: ORIGINAL MON MOTHMA TO PREQUELS MON MOTHMA

Everyone was excited to get even a glimpse of Mon Mothma when Rogue One came out. Yes, she was there for only a split second, but that was all that mattered. People who recognize this character simply love her. While she doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as some of the other characters, she does show up in quite a few films. While her look in Rogue One seemed to be paying tribute to the first time we saw her in the original series, the time we saw her in Revenge of the Sith was a real no go.

In that movie, she was given more embellishments to her costume that didn’t really seem to fit her character. While it was still relatively the same in the sense that she is still wearing a silver medallion and white dress, this newer version also gave her really strange hair and the pattern of her dress was now sort of out there. Granted, the prequels did seem to be trying really hard to give the audience a “alien” feel to it in the way they designed most of their costumes, but this just want’s a good look for Mon Mothma’s character overall.

10 LIKE: ORIGINAL OBI-WAN TO THE PHANTOM MENACE OBI-WAN

We all love Obi-Wan no matter what he looks like. At first, he plays this father-like, mentor role and when we see him as a young man for the first time we realize that it’s always just been his personality. He cares deeply about the way of the Jedi and through acting and costume we always see him as the kind of Jedi all should aspire to be. We can never replace the original Obi-Wan from the classics, but his looks in The Phantom Menace were certainly a good choice.

It was interesting that they gave him long hair and the same kind of beard that he would have later on in his life in the later prequel episodes. A lot of this was making sure that he looked reasonably like a younger version of the original, and he wears that traditional Jedi outfit, which would later become more of a recluse getup when we find him hiding years later as old man Ben. Because he and Qui-Gon are the first Jedi we’re introduced to, during a time when the entire Jedi are still around, we actually see that Obi-Wan’s earlier costume is more of a traditional garb rather than your average outfit. Overall, it was a good choice in design.

9 DISLIKE: A NEW HOPE REBELS TO RETURN OF THE JEDI REBELS

Every Star Wars fan wishes they could have been a rebel trooper, and why wouldn’t they? These were the literal heroes of the galaxy fighting against pure evil. They were interesting and certainly had a variety of costumes that any kid could pick from on Halloween. However, these were two of our least favorite trooper outfits out of all the things we’ve seen them charge into battle with, and the first outfit is iconic simply because we initially see them wearing these during a scruff with Darth Vader.

We admit, the helmets are a bit much, but it’s also a space war rebellion so we might not be ones to talk. But the clothing itself looked less like a uniform and more of a flash mob outfit at best -- it really wasn't the best look for resistance fighters. Later on, we get these more camouflage outfits that are supposed to help them blend into their environment, but it’s also not a truly memorable look -- it was one tactical change we understand but could do without. The most iconic uniform seems to be their orange jumpsuits and, honestly, we’re fine with that. These were just sort of the throw away costumes of the scene.

8 LIKE: ORIGINAL LANDO TO SOLO LANDO

We can all keep screaming that we get to see Donald Glover on0screen because him being cast to play Lando couldn’t be a more perfect fit. Lando is cheeky and fun and his original costumes seek to emulate his glamorous behavior. His original design called for him to have a lot of lavish costumes to show his position in the Star Wars universe, so we often saw him in a lot of bright colors and overdone costumes. And don’t forget his iconic cape -- even when he did decide to change he still had it on for most of the time we saw him.

Glover’s version doesn’t really call for a cape, but it does have that out there look to it. Even though he too is a smuggler, he’s always looked like a much more successful one than Han. His outfits are also brightly colored but look less dated then the last. Despite these films taking place in the future, you can often see what period they were written in by the design of the costume. Lando’s original look was a bit retro '70s, which makes sense considering the early films started coming out around that time. But the new Lando is given a modern twist that doesn’t look too ridiculous and still fits the character well.

7 DISLIKE: ORIGINAL LEIA TO SLAVE LEIA

We know, you’re probably gasping at the fact we don’t like this costume. We all love the classic Leia look, but it seems that people prefer the slave Leia look for the very fact that it holds a lot of appeal. For years, it’s plagued the cosplay community and we’re ready for a little bit of change. When it comes to it, the slave Leia look is a bit overdone to the point that even Fisher wasn’t too happy about it.

The idea behind this looks reportedly came from the fact that she was bored with some of her costumes. As iconic as they were, she felt that they were a little plain in their design and, as a result, costumes like this were made. However, the dress was very inflexible and it often caused a lot of wardrobe malfunctions during shoots -- several takes had to be given before they could move on due to indecent exposure. Fisher would later state her dissatisfaction with the outfit in several interviews and reports. While the design is intricate, we should also remember that it’s a design for someone in bondage and that, overall, there have been far better and more beautiful dresses in the Star Wars universe.

6 LIKE: ATTACK OF THE CLONES ANAKIN TO REVENGE OF THE SITH ANAKIN

We all know that Anakin would eventually change his outfit for a full mask as he finally became Darth Vader, but before that there’s a few changes to his looks that make him really stand out. When we finally see him as more of an adult in Attack of the Clones, he has the iconic braid and Jedi outfit that shows he’s still in training. As charming as he looks, he’s still clearly young with a lot more to learn -- we don’t get the sense that there’s an evil growing inside him.

When the next movie arrived, we finally saw that it was a physical change that sold us on his eventual turn to the dark side. Costumes do more than just make the actor look like the idea of their character, they also there to show us a physical struggle in the storyline. The closer Anakin gets to the dark side, the more we see that his hair is growing out long, almost unkempt, and the colors of his dress are getting darker. There’s also a point where he has a scar on his eye that sort of shows he’s face actual battle. All of these things combined with the actual acting really tell us that we’ve lost Anakin for good.

5 DISLIKE: FINN TO FIRST ORDER FINN

When Finn took off that stormtrooper armor, he became his own person and was finally free of the First Order. His new look was excellent because he looked just like everyone else. Not in the same way stormtroopers do with their outfits, but rather in the way that humans look like individuals. He looked comfortable and even better when he was wearing Poe’s jacket and, let’s face it, it just suited him better! That being said, it was heartbreaking when he had to put on a First Order disguise in order to save the rebels.

To be fair, Rose and Finn are both characters that look good no matter what. But it was pretty disturbing to see them in First Order officer uniforms -- sure, they looked good but it just wasn’t them. Besides, that was clearly a really uncomfortable situation for Finn who never wanted to come back to the Order ever. While these costumes are almost identical to the original Imperial Officer uniforms, they still have that sleek look to them that makes them look just a little too clean. They’re nice looking, but in an evil way. We just hope Finn, and Rose, will never have to put these costumes on again.

4 LIKE: A NEW HOPE LUKE TO RETURN OF THE JEDI LUKE

There is one very big costume change that Luke Skywalker undergoes and at this point it looks like he might join his father’s side in the darkness. He’s put in a dark outfit, befitting of the Sith, and follows his father around while he looks for a way to save him. Much like Anakin’s dress getting darker as the story continues, this also seems to symbolize what lengths Luke would go to in order to try and save the father he never knew. And while this outfit doesn’t suit Luke as a character, despite looking good, we like it because of the meaning behind it.

Luke pretends that he’s interested in what his father is doing, trying to con him into thinking that he could potentially join the dark side like his father before him. Wearing this outfit almost tells us that he would go to the dark side if only it meant that he was going to save Anakin in the end. While that doesn’t happen, it is pretty interesting to see him wear this kind of outfit. We almost never see Luke in anything that isn’t what he left Tatooine in. It’s always bright colors. This change was really out there, but kind of cool.

3 DISLIKE: BAIL ORGANA’S BLUE OUTFIT

Bail Organa is an incredible character. A good friend to Padme and later the adoptive father to her daughter, Leia, he’s always out to do the right thing in the name of democracy. Even when he’s not on the screen, you can see how he’s impacted the Star Wars universe in some way. That being said, there’s one outfit that Bail has that is not as great at what he does. Usually, we see Bail in very simple, yet elegant clothing. It’s something that shows a little bit of his status and also his personality.

But this blue outfit is just a bit too out there. It’s heavily embellished and, overall, doesn’t really work with his character. The black robe around it is actually pretty nice, but we’re not sure if he’s wearing a sweater or something else under it; the over all design just looks a bit strange. That being said, when we see Organa in Rogue One, it looks like he’s gone back to his more usual style of dress; and we love it. It looks like something a rebel would wear and it still gives us a vibe of leadership from him. As much as we love Bail, we’re going to have to bail out on this particular outfit.

2 LIKE: PADME DRESSES TO ATTACK OF THE CLONES PADME

Padme had some wonderful outfits that we could never forget. The first would be her stunning red look from The Phantom Menace, a look that would be attached to the name Queen Amidala. This original design actually served a very important purpose. Padme was really only 14 when she became the queen of Naboo, which elects their officials. Naboo is actually known for electing young women because they tend to feel these girls would have a more childlike innocence in their ruling than adults.

However, that doesn’t change their age and the fact that they are very young rulers when they take the throne. So Padme’s original outfit is actually to make her look older and perhaps even wiser for when people come to meet her. Even though she is no longer queen in the films to follow, it doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have the most beautiful wardrobe we’ve ever seen. Her dress in the meadow scene of Attack of the Clones is perhaps one of the most beautiful in her arsenal. While it looks a little simple at first, it is heavily embroidered and is adorned with some beautiful embellishments completed with her hair in two buns. It sort of looks like something out of the Renaissance and we love it!

1 DISLIKE: CLOUD CITY LANDO TO SKIFF GUARD LANDO

Yet another example of a disguise that we could have done without. The skiff guard armor is very well designed and does a good job of being rather intimidating. It’s supposed to cover Lando’s face so that they can get in and out of there without being noticed. However, just like with Finn, it’s one of those outfits that doesn’t fit this character. Disguises aren’t supposed to, but it doesn’t mean we have to like how they look. It’s odd to think that Lando would wear anything that covered his face.

We like that Lando has always had a little bit of flair to everything he wears, but that’s not something you can do if you’re a skiff guard. These were mercenaries or slaves that where there to work on a skiff, and Jabba the Hutt was very fond of them, which explains why Lando wore the costume to fit in the background. What’s interesting though is that no two guards look alike. There is no specific uniform, so there could have been any number of things that Lando could have worn. They also don’t have any particular weapons as they tend to be given anything that’s lying around to protect themselves with. Lando’s ensemble is fine on its own, but it simply doesn’t work for him as a character.
