The Star Wars movie franchise is one of the most iconic in cinematic history. Not only did the series showcase just how amazing this genre can be on the big screen, but it’s a classic that almost everyone and their mother has seen by now. The series has featured everything from complex, interstellar political ties to emotionally driven family plots. Dozens of famous lines have come out of this series and you’ve probably heard someone quote the movie at least once this year.

With the series still continuing, since the first movie’s premiere in the late '70s/ early '80s, there’s a lot of incredible improvements always being done. From puppetry to full on CGI and incredible artists, the movies of today have really been bringing the Star Wars universe to life. But before creators can even get to such tangible parts of their movie experience, they have to go through dozens of designs and make countless revisions. The Star Wars movies have always put in a lot of effort when it comes to detail, so everything from costumes to sets needs to be precise. This means that there are dozens of concept art drafts and full-blown completed pieces that imagine these characters and different scenarios in different ways. Of course, some of it will eventually become a canon part of the series, but there are a lot of concepts that needed to change, if they weren’t scrapped entirely. Here are 25 pieces of concept art that was never used in the official cut -- imagine how different the series would have been had they used it.

25 REALLY CREEPY KYLO...

There may have been a version of Kylo, according to this concept art, that was not only a little more damaged, but also missing an arm! We’re not exactly sure what it is with the Skywalker boys always losing hands and arms, but we’re kind of glad they didn’t go with it.

As cool as this concept is, it’s certainly overdone. The parallels between Kylo and Anakin are already very striking so they don’t really need anything physical like that.

24 WE NEVER SAW A MONSTER LIKE THIS!

Every Star Wars fan remembers the battle of Mustafar; this is the iconic scene in Revenge of the Sith where we finally get to see how Anakin needed his suit. Originally, the battle was supposed to include a huge monstrosity like this.

However cool it may look, we can see why it got scrapped. Throwing this big boy in the middle of such an emotional battle would have taken a lot away from the scene and certainly wouldn’t have made it quite a heartbreaking.

23 REY'S TRAINING LOOKS WAY MORE INTENSE!

According to this concept art, Rey’s training regiment might have been drastically different than what it was in the movies. Of course, she already made anything look cool while she practiced her fighting skills and readied herself for Kylo.

This is obviously a call out to how Luke trained in the Millennium Falcon, but the biggest difference is that Rey seems to have an entire team of these little guys surrounding her. It would certainly be difficult to fight off all of them!

22 WHO IS THIS CHARACTER?

Who doesn’t love a great villain? Star Wars is known for some of its excellent, and quite frankly, creepy, evil characters. When you even think of the Dark Side, you automatically think of the franchise and Darth Vader!

One potential Sith adversary that was considered for a villain role in Attack of the Clones was a character called Asajj Ventress. Unfortunately, she wasn’t ever used for the movie and was instead replaced with Count Dooku. We would, however, see her in the books, video games and even television shows later on.

21 BOBA FETT LOOKS A LITTLE MORE LIKE A STORMTROOPER

Boba Fett could have looked a lot more like a super Stormtrooper rather than his usual rusty, bounty hunter look. As neat as this costume is, and as flattering as the all-white suit may be, it’s not really his style.

Part of what made the Boba Fett suit so cool was that it looked beat up and rustic in its own way. This looks a little too formal for someone who doesn’t exactly work strictly for anyone. We’re glad they made the change!

20 KYLO SHOULD NEVER CUT HIS HAIR

We have to level with you: Adam Driver has pretty amazing hair. Say what you will about Kylo, but never diss the hair. We’re a little offended that the concept art would even suggest cutting it in the first place, let alone get rid of it altogether!

What we will say is that this does give him more of a dangerous vibe. In a lot of Kylo concept art, it looks like they tried to make his body damaged, much like Vader’s was.

19 IS THAT CHEWBACCA?

We really didn’t want to cover this concept art, but it’s such a classic idea that we absolutely have to. If you haven’t figured it out by now, this is what Chewbacca was originally thought to look like. We’re pretty sure no child would have wanted to be in the theater had this monster been on-screen.

It isn’t so much that the design is bad, but rather that it’s unwelcoming. The Chewbacca we know is certainly more fluffier, literally, and seems more inviting while also being capable of beating up baddies.

18 HAN'S PUNISHMENT LOOKED A LITTLE DIFFERENT

Everyone remembers the classic scene where Han Solo gets punished for his crimes and is encased in solid carbon; the famous line, “I love you” and response, “I know” came out of this. However, the concept art shows something a little different.

In this scene, there’s more of a prison vibe rather than some random room made just for Han. It certainly has a different vibe than what the movie gave it, but we’re always going to be happy with that scene!

17 WE DEFINITELY LIKE THE DARTH MAUL CHANGE

We’re not sure why anyone would think Darth Maul would look good as a straight and narrow type of guy, but it’s downright scary. This concept art was originally how they viewed the demonic-looking Sith originally.

We have to say, he looks like he’s about to go sharpen pencils before a big meeting, not really be a bad guy; although perhaps being exceptionally annoying is a form of evil? Regardless, we’re glad they decided to go with something a little more menacing.

16 A SUNKEN LAIR

One idea for The Force Awakens was to explore the Death Star II that had sunken on Endor. As the art shows, this would have been the Emperor’s throne room, now thoroughly soaked and damaged by the ocean.

This certainly would have been a cool scene to explore, and it’s definitely a shot we hope gets put in at least a video game or comic. The look is definitely creepy, giving you a feeling of the past coming back to haunt the present.

15 PADME VS ANAKIN!

This art piece should look a familiar, because this actually did happen, at least somewhat, in Revenge of the Sith. Padme, who was pregnant at the time, goes to confront Anakin for the crimes he’s committed. In the movie, this was a heart-wrenching scene.

However, the art here suggests that they might have actually been staged to fight. It would have been incredibly to see Padme really kick Anakin’s behind, but we can also see how being heavily pregnant would get in the way of that.

14 IS THAT REALLY THE "JEDI KILLER"?

It took a while for the creators to get Kylo’s armor just right, but here was another early concept of what his suit may have looked like. While it’s clear they took a drastic turn away from it, we can kind of see remnants of this particular design in the Snoke’s guard costumes.

Surely, those costumes would be all red to add that menacing touch. But there’s something unsettling about both the color and the faceless mask. It would have been interesting to see this take on Kylo be a reality.

13 ANOTHER KYLO, BUT MUCH COOLER!

Kylo’s armor has gone through a lot of changes since he was created. Of course, his new mask is pretty iconic, but we have to wonder what would have happened if they’d chosen to go with this design! It looks like his suit is much more complex and also has a little bit of a Vader vibe.

What’s also cool about it is that it incorporates red into the design; like the other Knights of Ren and his lightsaber. Matching is important!

12 LUKE FACES HIS FATHER

The Force Awakens did use one specific prop from this art piece: Darth Vader’s deteriorating mask. From the film, we saw that Kylo Ren had gotten his hands on it somehow, slightly worshipping it. After all, who’s a bigger fan of Vader than Kylo?

The concept art for The Last Jedi calls for Luke to actually hold the mask. It seems like it would have been a very tender moment, filled with a lot of emotion. We actually wish this would have been included in the film!

11 WE'RE GLAD WE NEVER SAW THIS

There have been a lot of memorable ends in the Star Wars series. Of course, plenty of them occur right in front of us with very well-staged fight scenes, but some of them are devastating in another way. Rather than seeing them up close and personal, we see a lot of explosions.

This concept art shows us a little more devastation that could have been shown in The Force Awakens, but we’re kind of glad they didn’t. Seeing bodies floating in space is just a little too dark for how this series tends to be.

10 THE ORIGINAL TEAM

Well, at the very least you should be able to recognize some of the characters in this team of misfits. This is one of the very early concept art pieces done that depicts the characters Luke, Han Solo, R2-D2, Chewbacca and C-3PO.

Originally, Luke was going to be a girl. This might have actually been pretty cool, but they decided to change the dynamic to a more tragic tale between father and son, with a very brave daughter as well.

9 KYLO TOTALLY RIPPED OFF HIS OWN GRANDPA

There has been a lot of early concept art for what Kylo Ren might have looked like. Of course, in order to make a good villain, you want to go through several edits before they even begin making costumes. A lot of concept art tries to parallel Kylo to his grandfather, Anakin.

However, this may be just a little too obvious. We know Ben is a huge fan, but he shouldn’t look exactly like Darth Vader. Had they gone with this design, it would have been a bit of a cheap shot.

8 A VOLCANO LAIR SEEMS A LITTLE MUCH

The original lair of the Emperor is an incredibly important set in the original series. It’s the place where Luke decides to fight with his father for the final time and it shows us just how evil the Dark Side can really be.

This original piece shows that the Emperor’s lair might have been thought to be underground in a more volcanic setting. As cool as this would have been, we’re sure Anakin wouldn’t have been to keen on being near it.

7 STORMTROOPERS WITH LIGHTSABERS

Could you imagine how different the movie would have been if they had given the Stormtroopers lightsabers? It seems like a crazy concept, and ultimately it doesn’t really fit the logic of the Star Wars universe, but we can see where the artist was coming from.

It certainly feels odd to see a Stormtrooper holding something so special; we’d agree with the movie’s change that making futuristic guns was far more appropriate in this regard. It fit their role as soldiers better.

6 HAN COULD HAVE BEEN AN ALIEN

Harrison Ford is known for being the attractive, charming loner, Han Solo, and he’s always been a popular character that most people swoon over. As great as this character was, could you imagine how big of a difference it would have been to make Han a giant green alien?

This was one concept art that reimagined him as a stranger. In fact, another character that changed species was also Jabba the Hut. He was originally a human, but the movie decided to create a giant slug instead.
