"Star Wars" Collected Edition Expected to Sell More Than 225,000 in Initial Orders

Marvel's current "Star Wars" line has been a major sales hit thus far in 2015, and it looks like that success will extend into the collected editions. ComicBook.com has word that the first volume of the "Star Wars" ongoing series, collecting issues #1-#6, is expected to sell more than 225,000 and 250,000, as reported by Marvel, in initial direct market retailer orders. The site points out that's roughly five times the average sales of most first volumes of Marvel collected editions.

"Once again, Star Wars continues to skyrocket the Marvel name even higher with the anticipated pre-order print-run between 200K and 250K units for 'Star Wars' Vol 1 TPB," David Gabriel, Marvel's SVP Print, Sales and Marketing, told ComicBook.com. "This is an unheard of number, but given the success that we've had with Star Wars since January, including the insurmountable 5MM units across all the Star Wars' series, second prints and overprints, we don't see any issue in reaching such a number of printed copies of this highly anticipated collected edition."

The first issue of Marvel's current "Star Wars" series, released in January and by writer Jason Aaron and artist John Cassaday (who has since left the series), was reported as selling more than a million copies, between dozens of variant covers and multiple nontraditional sales outlets (including a variant exclusive to popular subscription service Loot Crate).

Marvel announced its acquisition of the "Star Wars" license in January 2014, widely expected news following Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm in 2012 (putting Marvel and Star Wars under the same corporate umbrella). Previously, Dark Horse Comics held the Star Wars license, publishing material from 1991 to 2014. Marvel published the very first Star Wars comics, from 1977 to 1986.

"Star Wars Vol. 1: Skywalker Strikes" is scheduled for release on Oct. 7.
