The fate of the galaxy has so often rested on the simple choice of a Jedi: to continue following the Light Side of the Force or follow down the path of the Dark Side. To give in to anger and fear is to become a Sith, who are renowned for the violence they inflict as they enforce their doctrine of supremacy. Where once the Sith were known as an alien race, inbreeding with Dark Jedi that were banished from the Jedi Order, they were only made distinguishable in later centuries by their dedication to obtaining power.  Master Yoda once said that though the Dark Side wasn’t stronger, it was “easier”. Its promise of incredible power and abilities by succumbing to anger and hate have proven the downfall for many a Jedi. The Jedi Order focuses on harmony and serenity, which are both concepts that the Sith believe do nothing but promote stagnation and cultural decline.

But is it more than morality that provides the difference between the abilities of the Jedi and the Sith? While becoming a Jedi or a Sith is restricted to Force users, there are certainly other characters in the Star Wars Universe that have experienced personal tragedy, and if given the opportunity to draw on the fear of loss or the anger at seeing a loved one perish would most certainly do so. To be Force sensitive one has to have a high midi-chlorian count, which is probably not something porgs have, or droids, so it’s fun to imagine what they (and other) Star Wars characters would look like if they were reimagined as Sith.

19 REY

Rey is considered one of the most powerful Force users in the Star Wars saga, at least based on the nine films we have so far. Orphaned on the desert planet of Jakku to be raised as a scavenger, she could never have known that her hero’s journey would lead her to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and his training.

Rey has always had a strong attunement to the Force, which would have taken other Jedi years to obtain. Artist Tomasz Chistowski brings to life a Rey turned to the Dark Side, perhaps by Kylo Ren and the First Order, with attire that echoes what Anakin Skywalker wore as he turned to the Dark Side to become Darth Vader.

18 KANAN JARRUS

Kanan Jarrus was the captain of the starship Ghost before the Battle of Yavin (featured on Star Wars Rebels), and one of the only Jedi to survive Emperor Palpatine’s Order 66. He was only able to keep his identity a secret by joining and receiving aid from the Rebel Alliance.

Kanan Jarrus had to assume the alias Caleb Dume and go into hiding, rarely allowing himself to use his lightsaber lest he be discovered as a Jedi. Artist Nathaniel Pike rendered a version of Jarrus that was certainly not skulking in the shadows, but a powerful Sith complete with armor, facial tattoos, and a red lightsaber with an exquisitely carved hilt.

17 PORG

Found on a small island on the planet Ahch-To, where Jedi Master Luke Skywalker had gone into hiding, porgs are so plentiful as to be thought a nuisance. Small, feathered creatures, somewhere between a bird and a mammal, they have large round eyes, a gaping mouth, and webbed feet. Inquisitive creatures, they will follow you endlessly if you promise to share your food.

To some, porgs were the bane of The Last Jedi, as criminal in their cuteness as Ewoks were in Return of the Jedi. Perhaps to retaliate, artist CardboardKnife envisioned a porg that had been consumed by the Dark Side, and wasn’t going to take anymore guff (see those teeth?). Where it gets the strength to hold a lightsaber is another matter...

16 WICKET

Living on the remote forest moon of Endor in a hunter-gatherer society, the Ewoks didn’t concern themselves with the rest of the galaxy until the Empire and the Rebellion brought civil war to their doorstep. One particular speeder bike chase through the forest between Princess Leia and a few biker scouts resulted in her being thrown from her bike, and being happened upon by Wicket.

This piece by Belov Pavel shows Wicket wielding Kylo Ren’s distinct lightsaber, shrouded in a dark cowl. It was created as joke art, suggesting that Episode VIII might actually be able the Ewok Uprising. It certainly makes them look much more dangerous than they normally do.

15 YODA

One of the most powerful Jedi to ever live, Jedi Master Yoda has 900 years of experience both of the Living Force and how to use it in battle. He has proven himself time and again to be a fierce warrior against Darth Sidious and Count Dooku, as well as a patient teacher to Luke Skywalker.

Artist Daryl Mandryk  has envisioned the tiny Jedi as a Sith Lord, holding the rank of Darth, with typical Sith robes and some sort of black pelt around his neck. His eyes glow crimson with the Dark Side of the Force, and he has various jewelry and ornaments that reflect images of Sith Witchcraft.

14 OBI-WAN KENOBI

One of the fiercest fighters and most prudent Jedi Masters in the Jedi Order, Obi-Wan Kenobi was famous for being a sagacious General during the Clone Wars, and for training Anakin Skywalker in the Jedi Arts. When Anakin turned to the Dark Side at the hands of Darth Sidious, he vowed that Anakin’s son Luke Skywalker would not be corrupted like his father was.

There is a moment, during Attack of the Clones when Count Dooku tempts the Jedi Master with an offer to join the Separatist Army. Had he done so, he would perhaps look something like how Charles Antoine Valois has depicted him here, with a combination of Sith and Clone Trooper armor, a red lightsaber, and an aura of the Dark Side.

13 KIT FISTO

A renowned duelist who fought valiantly in the Clone Wars, Kit Fisto was one of the more visually striking Jedi Masters. A Nautolan of the water planet Glee Anselm, he had large black eyes and a series of tentacles that protruded like a headdress down his back and shoulders. He proved himself in Attack of the Clones when he fought to free Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme from their gladiatorial execution on Geonosis.

Artist Rich Bailey has conveyed Fisto’s great energy here, with his black Sith robes unfurling and his tentacles splayed wildly around his head. With their red pigmentation and black geometric shapes, they almost resemble the Zabrak tattoos of Darth Maul.

12 BB-8

As soon as he appeared in The Force Awakens as a rolling orange bundle of heroics, BB-8 was destined to be as memorable a character as R2D2. Originally the companion of Poe Dameron, ace Rebel fighter pilot, he became mostly associated with the scavenger Rey when she finds him alone on Jakku.

With a spunky personality as well as a good heart (for a droid) he was usually a source of amusement and fun. And what's funnier than a Sith Lord BB-8? Sure, the First Order already has a black BB-9 model, but he doesn't have a light that's a lightsaber. No doubt this little guy would lull his victims into a false sense of security with his cuteness.

11 LUKE SKYWALKER

Luke Skywalker began his life as a humble farmboy and turned into one of the greatest Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. Not only that, he was a decorated pilot who was responsible for the destruction of the Empire’s Death Star and the last of the Sith Order.

There were moments in his hero's quest when he could have easily fallen to the Dark Side -- when Vader offered to rule the galaxy with him, and when the Emperor even offered him Vader's position as his apprentice. Here we see him in an homage to Dark Empire, a comic that showed what would have happened if Luke turned to the Dark Side and became the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet.

10 GENERAL GRIEVOUS

Not since Darth Maul has there been a more interesting looking villain to come from the Star Wars prequels. General Grievous, the Supreme Commander of the Droid Army, was a cyborg from Kalee who enhanced his abilities in combat with cybernetic implants. Count Dooku recruited him to his Confederacy of Separatists due to his evil nature and callous demeanor.

A Sith Lord, Dooku trained him in the Jedi arts, and Grievous became quite skilled with a lightsaber (which he could wield four of at a time with his four arms). Artist Isuardi Therianto shows how good Grievous would have been as a Sith Lord, with black and red armor, and mastery of the Dark Side.

9 WOOKIEE

Wookiees have long gotten a violent reputation. Their violence isn’t reserved for sport, however; they’ve been a warrior species for thousands of years. Wookiees live roughly five times longer than a human, are two and a half meters tall, and are known to be both brave and affectionate. One of the most famous of them was Chewbacca, first mate aboard the Millennium Falcon.

There’s nothing more disconcerting than seeing a Wookiee bellowing his war cry. Pavel Balabanov has captured what it would look like if a Sith Wookie rider were charging at you on a reptilian mount, his red lightsaber glowing as red as his cyborg eye. The fury of a Wookiee of the Dark Side would not be one to test your courage against.

8 JAR JAR BINKS

Jar Jar Binks has become without a doubt one of the most hated characters in the entire Star Wars Universe. The Phantom Menace marked his first appearance, where the Gungan owed Jedi Master Qui Gon Jinn a “life debt” for saving the Jedi’s life. This started a chain reaction of events resulting in him being named a Senator of Naboo, who voted to elect Senator Palpatine, the soon-to-be Emperor.

His clumsy demeanor aside, many fans have wondered if beneath all his incompetence, Jar Jar Binks wasn’t secretly a Sith mastermind playing everyone for fools. Who would suspect the awkward and stupid Binks of secretly plotting to destroy the Jedi Order when he voted for Palpatine’s ascent?

7 QUI-GON JINN

A controversial figure to most Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn was not one to obey authority, even the Jedi Council. Though he had an undeniably strong connection with the Living Force, and was an astute philosopher, he would be forever remembered as the Jedi who thought Anakin Skywalker could bring Balance to the Force. He sealed the fate of the galaxy when Anakin brought about its downfall.

Since he was so at odds with the Jedi Council, it’s not surprising to think he could turn to the Dark Side. The pressure of seeing that Anakin brought Balance to the Force, and proving his myopic Jedi peers wrong, could have been enough. Artist wynahiros shows the focused menace that exudes from a Sith Qui-Gon Jinn.

6 LEIA

Leia Organa Solo has been a senator, a princess, a Rebel leader, and a general in the Resistance. The Last Jedi revealed that when she chooses, she can tap into her inherent connection to the Force and even survive the vacuum of space.

It’s clear that Leia could have certainly become a Jedi, and a powerful one. She is the daughter of Anakin Skywalker after all, and the same powers flow through her. She went to great pains to conceal her identity as the daughter of Darth Vader to the Senate, and here we see artist Phil Noto has depicted her in essence as Lady Vader, with shadows of his own Sith armor.

5 MACE WINDU

Unlike the more serene Jedi around him, a darkness seemed to always simmer beneath Master Mace Windu’s carefully cultivated appearance. He was far more militant than the rest of his peers on the Jedi Council, and he was one of only a few Jedi who had mastered Form VII, which requires the practitioner to exude a hunger for battle in order for it to be executed well.

This depiction of Master Windu is actually concept art from a cancelled Battlefront IV game, one in which prominent Jedi characters were depicted as Sith. In his black Sith robes, still bearing the skin lacerations from when Darth Sidious struck him with Force lightning, he manages to be even more threatening than he already is.

4 POE DAMERON

Poe Dameron may have a hot-headed streak, but he is every bit the heroic Resistance pilot that he was presented as in The Force Awakens. With a rakish charm and ready smile, he was courageous and daring, if not slightly reckless when it came to executing battle plans.

Rumors swirled that Poe was once a TIE-fighter pilot for the First Order. Artist Nicha Sheng has placed Poe, in Sith robes, in front of a background that looks suspiciously like the wing of a TIE-fighter. Flashes of his darker nature came through in The Last Jedi, when he let his superiority complex get ahead of the mission. His anger at the injustice around him could have easily been used to serve the Dark Side.

3 BOTHAN

The first mention of Bothans came from Mon Mothma in Return of the Jedi during a Rebel Alliance debriefing. She informs the assembled that the Emperor is constructing a second Death Star, and personally overseeing its construction, a piece of intelligence which many Bothans died to pass on. Despite being quite large, with pointed ears, a prominent muzzle, and covered in fur, they are known for their stealth.

Like something out of a horror film about werewolves, this depiction of a Bothan by an unknown artist is truly scary. It’s depicted wearing Sith armor, wielding a unique red lightsaber, and perceived to have facial markings or tattoos that could possibly be Sith runes.

2 BARRISS OFFEE

A Jedi that spent much of her time in the library of the Jedi Temple pouring over ancient Jedi texts, Barriss Offee could handle a battlefield when necessary (though she much preferred her books!). A padawan to Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, she came of age when the Clone Wars were just beginning to shape the fate of the galaxy.

In Season 5 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Barriss Offee became frustrated with the actions of the Jedi and seemed to drift towards the Dark Side. Here, artist Crimsonight has shown what would have been the result of Barriss fully committing to being a Sith. She is certainly not the bookworm to upset!

1 AHSOKA TANO

First appearing in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ahsoka Tano became a favorite of Star Wars fans because of her spunky personality and determination. She was once the Apprentice of Anakin Skywalker, who had achieved the rank of Jedi Knight by the time the Clone Wars were really in full swing. Because she was headstrong, she would often clash with Skywalker, but despite their differences they maintained a close bond until he fell to the Dark Side.

Here we see the harshest parts of Ahsoka’s personality magnified in this piece by Fausto Montano; all of her passion, determination, and commitment. If she ever fell to the Dark Side like her mentor, she would be one of its greatest assets.
