Darth Maul is one of the most popular villains in the Star Wars animated universe. After being defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace, fans everywhere presumed this Sith lord to be long dead and forgotten, replaced by Count Dooku. However, he survived off his hatred and made a return in the animated shows. He is a consistent character and threat in Clone Wars and Rebels and one of the main focuses of the newest and final season of Clone Wars.

Darth Maul is a skilled saber combatant with the ability and skill to use a double-sided lightsaber. Maul's force abilities aren't as powerful as many of the other Force-wielders we see, but his rage guides him in battle, and sometimes that is the cause of his downfall as well. Here is a list of other characters from all over the Star Wars universe who can and can't defeat him in one-on-one combat.

10 Can't - Rey

As skilled as the young Jedi from the sequel trilogy is, she would certainly lose against Maul's aggressive fighting style. Rey has faced Kylo Ren a number of times. And due to their complicated relationship, many of the lightsaber combats Rey has seen has been feigned, with Kylo or Rey holding back their punches (in this case, swings).

She never officially finishes her training with Luke Skywalker, and because of this Maul would be unlike anything Rey has ever faced. Rey knows how to use a staff in combat, but Maul knows how to use it better and actually has a saber staff. Rey also is still new to using the force and must concentrate while doing so, and in that moment of hesitation, Maul would strike.

9 Can - Yoda

Due to his proficient skills within the force, Yoda is also an incredibly skilled lightsaber combatant. He is one of the highest-ranking Jedi in the Jedi council. Because of his Force sensitivity, Yoda would easily be able to evade Maul's attacks. He also has incredible agility and would be able to move around the double-sided saber with ease.

Yoda is extremely wary of the dark side, he knows that it clouds judgment. Maul is a prime example of this. Yoda would easily be able to outmaneuver Darth Maul and then outsmart him.

8 Can't- Leia

Leia Star Wars Cropped

As much as fans everywhere would all love to see Princess Leia whoop Maul's butt in a fight, the truth is our princess probably wouldn't stand much of a chance. In terms of politics, Maul plays dirty. He uses his armies for his own advantage and doesn't really care what happens to them. This is the exact opposite of Leia. Leia cares so much for all her people. She cherishes them as if they were her own family, sometimes even more than her family (according to a young Ben Solo).

Leia can handle her own in a gunfight, but if it was a one on one battle between the princess and Maul, the latter would definitely take the win.

7 Can- Emperor

Darth Maul was originally an apprentice to Darth Sidious during The Phantom Menace, but was quickly replaced. This angered Maul as he was stripped of his "Darth" title and was no longer claimed as a Sith by the Sith lord. In an attempt to become new Sith lords, Maul convinced his brother, Savage Opress, to become his apprentice, making the two Dathomirian brothers master and apprentice of the "new" Sith regime.

To finalize their plan, they needed to kill Sidious. But all does not go to Maul's plan. Sidious quickly murders Savage and defeats Maul. He uses his lightsabers, but truthfully, the dark lord doesn't even need them. The fight between them felt more like a cat playing with his food before eating it.

6 Can't- Ezra Bridger

Ezra Bridger wielding a lightsaber from Star Wars Rebels

Ezra Bridger from Star Wars Rebels almost became a new apprentice for Maul. Maul is constantly seeking companionship, from the Emperor, from Savage Oppress, and now from Ezra. He wanted someone by his side to complete the Sith dynamic of "always two."

Unfortunately for Maul, Ezra discovered his true intentions and rejected his request. While Ezra can pull a few sly tricks from his sleeve, he doesn't quite have what it takes just yet. Ezra is an upcoming Jedi, but would not be strong enough in the force nor saber combat to defeat Maul.

5 Can - Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader

Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader would be able to defeat Maul. Both variations of him are the strongest beings with the force and can use and manipulate it with ease. While Darth Vader vs Maul would be slightly more difficult for Skywalker due to his slowed movements and Maul's quickstep, Vader would easily be able to halt Maul with a simple force choke, rendering him useless.

As for Anakin, he is a general in the Clone Wars and is shown to be a highly-skilled fighter and Force user. Anakin thinks outside of the box which would definitely best Maul in saber-to-saber combat. Maul is so focused on defeating that he sometimes cannot sense things in the Force as easily. This would give Anakin the upper hand to use his skills against Maul.

4 Can't - Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker Star Wars Cropped

As much as fans would probably want to see Luke win this matchup, it is pretty unlikely. Luke is strong with the force, something Maul struggles with. He is so focused on his hatred that his Force sensitivity evades him. But when it comes to lightsaber combat, Maul is the definite winner. In the original trilogy, Luke only really faced Darth Vader in saber-to-saber combat.

And as powerful as Vader is with the force, his blows are slow and heavy, making it easy for young Skywalker to dodge and counter. Maul would be unlike anything Luke has ever faced. He is faster than Luke, and the double-sided saber would surely throw the young Jedi off. It would be a tough battle between the two, but Maul would surely reign supreme.

3 Can - Obi-Wan Kenobi

Star Wars Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan is Maul's greatest enemy. He has an obsession with Obi-Wan and blames him for everything that has gone wrong in his life. In The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan "kills" Darth Maul. Fans everywhere assumed the Nightbrother had died until his first appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Through several more battles, Obi-Wan learns Maul "doesn't seem to stay dead."  A quote he says in the seventh season of the show.

However, years pass and fans discover that Maul's hatred for Obi-Wan has kept him going all this time. In Star Wars Rebels he is still seeking out the old Jedi. This is the final battle between these scorned enemies. Obi-Wan has aged and wisened. He knew how to defeat Maul.

2 Can't - Qui-Gon Jinn

Unfortunately for this wise Jedi master, Qui-Gon was unable to defeat Darth Maul, costing him his life in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Qui-Gon was a Jedi who practiced instinct over strategy, and because of this, he failed. Maul was too quick for him.

In one swift movement, Maul was able to bunt Qui-Gon with his hilt in the face, leaving the Jedi stunned, and then stabbed him through the chest. Darth Maul was better skilled in saber combat, and Qui-Gon knew this but acted anyway. He was known to be an impulsive Jedi and this led to Maul's victory.

1 Can - Ahsoka Tano

Ahsoka Tano with her lightsabers in Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Spoilers ahead for the newest season of Clone Wars. Ahsoka Tano, the young padawan to Anakin Skywalker and star of The Clone Wars series is the perfect matchup for Maul. Like Maul, Ahsoka is an extremely skilled fighter.  Maul is one of the most skilled lightsaber combatants in the Star Wars universe, and it is no small feat that Ahsoka can take him on.

Like Anakin, she is much more powerful with the force and she has incredible wit that she can use to her advantage against him. Maul's pull to the dark side blinds him to those who can outsmart him. Ahsoka has proven herself against him in Clone Wars season 7, episode 10 "The Phantom Apprentice."
