As Obi-Wan Kenobi tried to reinforce to Anakin Skywalker at every possible instance throughout the Star Wars prequels, the lightsaber is incredibly precious to a Jedi. Once they reached the right age, Jedi would go on a holy pilgrimage to the planet Ilum where they would find the Kyber crystal that would power their lightsabers. Jedi carried no other weapons and very few tools. A lightsaber and the Force was all they had to defend the galaxy.

That being said, more than a few Jedi have successfully lost their lightsabers over the years, including Anakin on several occasions. As was often the case, he really didn't listen to Obi-Wan. Maintaining a lightsaber was key to being a good Jedi— one of many red flags concerning Anakin that everyone should've noticed.

10 General Grievous Was A Lightsaber Collector

General Grievous In Star Wars: The Clone Wars

To be clear, General Grievous didn't really ever seem to  lose or break a lightsaber. He wasn't a Force user and he technically never owned his own personal lightsaber. What Grievous had was several lightsabers he stole from Jedi that he injured or even killed over the course of the Clone Wars.

It's not Grievous who is being pointed to as a careless lightsaber owner— it's all of the Jedi he took lightsabers from. That included Pablo-Jill, Eeth Koth, Shaak Ti, Roron Corobb, Nahdar Vebb and more, all of whom lost their lightsabers to him at various times.

9 Ahsoka Tano Leaves Her Lightsabers With Her Clones

When Ahsoka Tano walked away from the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars, she left her status as a Jedi and her lightsabers behind. This was the first time in years she had been without her key weapons by her side.

A short time after that, they would be returned to her by Anakin Skywalker. She briefly returned in service of the Republic just before Order 66. The result of that action left her and Captain Rex as the only survivors of their crew of Clones. Ahsoka left her lightsabers at their burial site.

8 Yoda Loses His Lightsaber Fighting Palpatine

Yoda and Palpatine having a lightsaber duel

While there are still a lot of details missing in regards to Jedi Master Yoda, The Mandalorian has been filling in a select few of those blanks. That being said, the series has been asking a lot more questions than it answers. But the fate of Yoda's lightsaber has never been in question.

After the implementation of Order 66 in Revenge of the Sith, Yoda ended up facing off against Palpatine in a lightsaber duel in the Senate Chambers. It was during this fight that Yoda lost his lightsaber, which has yet to reappear since then.

7 Darth Vader Destroys Ezra Bridger's Lightsaber

No one was sure what to expect from Star Wars: Rebels when the project was first announced. What they got was one of the best Star Wars stories ever created, centering around the adventures of a group of incredible characters as they helped build the Rebellion.

But given the era this series happened in, fans were waiting for Darth Vader to show up. And when he did, things got intense really fast. Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger barely survived their encounters with him. Unfortunately for Ezra, his first lightsaber did not and was annihilated by Vader.

6 Cal Kestis' First Lightsaber Was Destroyed

Cal Kestis

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was breakout video game hit. It focused on a young Jedi named Cal Kestis who had barely escaped Order 66 and went into hiding to stay alive. After being drawn into the open by an Inquisitor, Cal went on a mission to stop the Empire from getting more powerful.

At the point the story started, Cal was carrying the damaged lightsaber that belonged to his fallen master, Jaro Tapal. The weapon would be fully destroyed during a Force vision on Dathomir, though Cal would go on to build a new lightsaber later on in the game.

5 Darth Maul Kicked Obi-Wan's Lightsaber Into A Hole

Kenobi fights Maul on Naboo

Obi-Wan Kenobi was usually the first Jedi to lecture another Jedi, particularly Anakin and Ahsoka, about the importance of a lightsaber. That being said, he also lost a couple of them throughout his long career.

When he and Qui-Gon Jinn were battling Darth Maul for their lives on Naboo, Obi-Wan quite literally lost his lightsaber when Maul kicked it down a hole. But Obi-Wan returned the favor when he used Qui-Gon's lightsaber to cut Maul in half and drop him down that same hole.

4 Anakin Gave His Lightsaber To Padmé

Anakin And Padme

Possibly the dumbest way to lose a lightsaber is by giving it away to impress someone. That's exactly what Anakin Skywalker did when he handed his weapon over to his secret wife, Senator Padmé Amidala, as a way of proving she mattered more to him than being a Jedi.

Naturally, that's when Cad Bane and a group of bounty hunters attacked the Senate building. It would have been the perfect time for Anakin to break out his lightsaber and take them all down. There's a reason why Obi-Wan kept telling him to take care of his weapon.

3 Luke Lost His Lightsaber In Cloud City

Luke Skywalker loses his hand and his lightsaber in Empire Strikes Back

Possibly the most infamous lightsaber loss of all time went down on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader had lured Luke Skywalker there by using his friends as bait. Yoda knew this wouldn't end well but Luke went anyway. He didn't really have a choice.

Their battle finished with Vader revealing that he was Luke's father, one of the most infamous scenes in film history. But moments before that, Vader cut Luke's hand off, sending it tumbling with his lightsaber. It would not reappear until it called to Rey in The Force Awakens.

2 Asajj Ventress Gets Mugged

Dooku Tried To Kill Asajj Ventress

When it comes to hard luck stories in the Star Wars universe, Asajj Ventress is the grand champion. She has been given away, betrayed, and lost two different masters to pirates. But she overcame it all to become one of the most fearsome warriors in the galaxy, though she still had terrible luck.

When Barriss Offee was setting Ahsoka up in Season 5 of The Clone Wars, she jumped Ventress and stole her lightsabers. It left Asajj unarmed and in a rough spot when Anakin came looking for information. This was the last time she appeared on the series.

1 Obi-Wan Took Anakin's Lightsaber On Mustafar

Obi-Wan Kenobi fights Anakin Skywalker in a lightsaber duel on Mustafar in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

Throughout the course of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan suffered a lot of tragedy and heartbreak. Maul killing the Duchess Sabine was a low for him, one that he never saw coming. Unfortunately for Kenobi, things could still get worse.

After Anakin turned to the Dark Side, Obi-Wan faced him on Mustafar. Ultimately, Obi-Wan came out on top, leaving Anakin short several limbs and slowly burning to death by a river of lava. On top of that, Obi-Wan took Anakin's lightsaber with him, eventually giving it to Luke many years later on Tatooine.
