Pre-production on Star Wars: Cassian Andor, the prequel miniseries starring the fan-favorite Rogue One character, is well underway for its eventual premiere on Disney+. According to Lucasfilm visual effects specialist Neal Scanlan, who has worked on every single Star Wars film since the studio's acquisition by Disney, characters that may have been cut from the franchise's films will instead make their appearance in the upcoming miniseries.

"We also have this backlog of characters," teased Scanlan in an interview with MovieWeb. "A lot of the characters that we built for all of the films either didn't make it to the final cut... or that they are seen so momentarily," he stated. Turning to the upcoming series, he explained, "There is this wonderful second opportunity to bring back some of the characters that we've made and bring them to this new storyline."

Details on the miniseries are still currently under wraps but will feature Cassian and his trusty droid K-2SO together on new adventures set before the events of Rogue One. A previously released plot synopsis attached to the production teased that the miniseries would be "a rousing spy thriller" as Cassian takes on the machinations of the Galactic Empire.

Helmed by showrunner Stephen Schiff, Star Wars: Cassian Andor stars Diego Luna as the title character and Alan Tudyk as K-2S0. It is expected to premiere on Disney+ sometime in 2021.
