Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy isn't ready to greenlight any new Star Wars films, a new report claims.

Reliable industry source and Puck columnist Matt Belloni recently stated in his newsletter that Kennedy won't be announcing any big screen additions to the franchise at the upcoming D23 fan event. According to Belloni, this is because the Lucasfilm boss isn't yet at the point where she's comfortable moving forward with the Star Wars movies currently in development, including a rumored project spearheaded by Lost's Damon Lindelof. Belloni added that Kennedy's hesitancy could stem from her desire not to replicate past instances in which she promoted films that have so far failed to materialize. He also notes that this will likely leave at least a five-year gap between 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and the saga's next cinematic installment.

One project previously announced by Kennedy that is still yet to make it into theaters is Rian Johnson's Star Wars trilogy. Johnson, who directed 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, recently assured fans that the unnamed trio of films is still in the works, albeit without its hyperdrive engaged. "I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it," he said. "It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point."

The Star Wars Saga's Many Stalled Movies

Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron is another Star Wars production that has seemingly stalled, after Lucasfilm put the fighter pilot-centric movie on indefinite hold in November 2021. Reports at the time indicated that creative differences between Jenkins and the studio were the reason why Rogue Squadron was delayed, as the director allegedly clashed with several Lucasfilm executives, including senior vice president Michelle Rejwan. Neither Jenkins nor Lucasfilm have publicly commented on Rogue Squadron's postponement, however.

Fortunately for fans, at least one Star Wars movie is supposedly moving closer to the big screen: Taika Waititi's as-yet-untitled entry into the canon. Recent rumblings in the trade press indicate that Waititi's Star Wars project is actually much further in development than previously believed, and Lucasfilm is allegedly targeting an early 2023 release date for the film. If these reports are accurate, it would mean that the production would need to enter principal photography relatively soon, to allow enough time for editing, visual effects, sound design and other aspects of the post-production process.
