A new teaser trailer for The Book of Boba Fett has been released.
The clip begins with Boba Fett introducing himself and recalling how he was "left for dead on the sands of Tatooine." As this line is spoken, the teaser cuts to a shot of Fett healing himself in a bacta tank, suggesting the show might flash back to his escape from the dreaded Great Pit of Carkoon.
In Return of the Jedi, Fett's jetpack malfunctioned after he was struck by a blinded Han Solo. The ordeal sent him flying into one of the skiffs and then tumbling into the mouth of the sarlacc, seemingly killing the fan-favorite bounty hunter. In Season 2 of The Mandalorian, it was revealed that Fett somehow escaped the sarlacc, and while this has been explored in the now-defunct Expanded Universe, the story has yet to be told in Disney's Star Wars canon.
The Book of Boba Fett picks up after Season 2 of The Mandalorian, which saw Fett execute Bib Fortuna and claim the late Jabba the Hutt's throne for himself. "You pull somebody like [Jabba] out of the ecosystem of Tatooine – and Hutt Space in general – and you have the opportunity that’s ripe in the gangster genre," executive producer Jon Favreau said. "There is a power vacuum, because Jabba is gone. Jabba was clearly a very strong and imposing leader, who people were very scared of, and who seemed to rule with an iron fist."
The show is spearheaded by Robert Rodriguez, who helmed the episode of The Mandalorian that brought Fett back into the fold. "I've been friends with [Jon Favreau] for a long time and I wrote him after the third episode. I would send him emails from back in the day saying my kids loved Zathura and they would watch it over and over again," Rodriguez told CBR this past summer. "I'd always be sending him fan mail, so I sent him fan mail about this Mandalorian episode, like, 'Man, another one out of the park! Kickass job!' And he said, 'Actually, can I call you? I just lost one of my directors. Do you want to come to bring some of that Alita magic?'"
The Book of Boba Fett premieres Dec. 29 on Disney+.
