Summary

  • Boba Fett's ship name was changed from Slave I to Firespray, but still maintains its unique identity in the Star Wars lore.
  • The Firespray model is a versatile ship tailored for bounty hunting, equipped with essential features like a brig, tractor beam, and hyper-drive system.
  • Amidst new Star Wars projects, the future of Boba Fett remains uncertain, leaving fans eager to see where the fearsome bounty hunter fits in.

Ships in Star Wars carry the same iconography as certain characters, like Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. They act as tools that take fans, and their pilots, to the next great adventure. They're the ultimate form of escapism.

One of the best examples is Boba Fett's ship. Originally, the vessel was called the Slave-1, but because of the racial implications, Disney quietly retired the name. However, it didn't take long for fans to notice, and voice their opinions, with some wanting the name to stay the same. But in a genius form of compromise, while Boba Fett's ship has finally gotten a new moniker, it's not entirely new to Star Wars lore.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 7, 2024: The Star Wars franchise is continuing to grow in new and exciting ways. After over four years without a film, Lucasfilm has announced four upcoming cinematic projects, including two centered around the Mandalorian, one set 25,000 years before The Phantom Menace, and one set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. However, with all these plans to continue these stories, it remains unclear precisely where the famed bounty hunter Boba Fett falls in future projects.

Trivia

  • Boba Fett first appeared in an animated section of the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special. He was voiced by Don Francks in the television special.

As part of Marvel's 2021 canonical War of the Bounty Hunters event, the publisher announced a collection of variant covers. However, rather than a vibrant action piece or group shot, the variants featured blueprints of different Star Wars bounty hunter ships alongside their pilots. Those included Bossk and his ship, the Hound's Tooth, IG-88 with the IG-2000, and Boba Fett with his classic ship, now titled the Firespray.

At first glance, the name Firespray seems unorthodox for a ship like Boba's, as it has neither a fiery color scheme nor a flamethrower. In truth, it isn't necessarily a name, like the Millennium Falcon. It's a shortened version of the type of ship. The model's full designation is the Firespray-31-class patrol and attack craft or Firespray-class interceptor. Its title is more akin to how Din Djarin named his ship the Razor Crest on The Mandalorian. The Razor Crest is only a slight change from the ship's real designation, the Razor Craft. Firesprays were initially produced by Kuat Systems Engineering and, with some modifications, are capable of being the perfect ship for bounty hunting.

The ships are often seen patrolling the prison moon Oovo IV, where Jango Fett stole his own Firespray. Off the manufacturing line, the ship comes standard with a light tractor beam and auto blasters. It can travel through hyperspace and is capable of holding up to six prisoners. Following Fett's customizations, the ship is also seen releasing seismic charges, which nearly killed Obi-Wan Kenobi in Attack of the Clones.

Trivia

  • In the Original Trilogy, Boba Fett is portrayed by Jeremy Bulloch. Temuera Morrison later provided voiceover for the bounty hunter in re-releases of the trilogy, after portraying the role of Jango Fett, the specimen all the clones were created from.

What makes the ship great for bounty hunting stems directly from why it was made. As a pursuit vehicle used to patrol a prison planet, it's designed to capture escapees. With a big, tractor beam and hyper-drive system, it's one of the galaxy's most efficient bounty-hunting vehicles. Its auto blaster also can rain blaster bolts down on an enemy at rapid speed, helping to justify the name Firespray. The name change also works well for Boba because it doesn't even look like the same ship as his father's, so by changing its name, it becomes more of Boba's ship instead of being one he inherited from Jango.

Change often brings about criticism, especially when it comes to the Star Wars franchise. While changing Boba Fett's ship's name may seem strange, or even wrong, to some, it feels organic and right for the character. Boba Fett is one of the most intimidating hunters in the galaxy, and a name like Firespray only solidifies that. The ship's name is also unique when compared to the more extravagant monikers of his competition, like Dengar's ship, The Punishing One. Time will prove that no matter what name Boba Fett's ship carries, it's still one of the most feared vessels in the galaxy.

Trivia

  • The next Star Wars movie slated for release is Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is expected to hit theaters sometime in 2026.

Despite there being many new Star Wars projects slated for release in the next few years, Boba Fett is not currently attached to any of them. It seems unlikely that The Book of Boba Fett will continue past its first season, but that doesn't mean that Star Wars has to be finished with Boba Fett himself. The character still has plenty of stories left to be told in the franchise.

The most likely place for Boba Fett to show up next is in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Din Djarin and Boba Fett have worked together multiple times in the past, forming a strong alliance through their various adventures together. Moreover, Fett's connections as the new crime lord of Tattooine could prove incredibly useful for Djarin as he continues his battle against the Imperial Remnant and the newly returned Grand Admiral Thrawn. Boba Fett could easily return in the upcoming movie, playing a supporting role as he helps save the galaxy.

Boba Fett remains one of the most popular bounty hunters in the Star Wars franchise. No matter where he appears next or what title his iconic ship carries, Fett will always be one of the most interesting characters in the entire franchise.
