In 2015, Marvel Comics officially took over the production of Star Wars comics, which was previously being published by Dark Horse Comics. There are plenty of incredible stories getting told in the newer Star Wars series published by Marvel Comics.

Updated September 30th By Rhys McGinley: In this new era of Star Wars, there is a bounty of amazing content to consume — and it is getting released on a regular basis, particularly on the print side of things. Like there was during the time of the EU, comics are getting pumped out all the time, and the canon has had many brilliant ones come from  Marvel Comics. They've expanded on beloved characters, crafted excellent stories, and brought joy to many fans. There are too many to fit into a list of just ten, so we've added a few more.

15 Thrawn

Thrawn is one of the best characters that have not yet made an appearance on the big screen. Thrawn is an admiral in the Empire, and the comic series tells the story of how he rose to power and overcame some intense challenges to maintain his position. The ambitious admiral has appeared in Star Wars: Rebels, the popular animated television show, but he has not yet made it into any of the films.

The comic run is a comic version of the Thrawn novel is full of intense strategy as Thrawn uses his ruthless techniques to outsmart his opponents. The character and the comic series are both unique and captivating entries into the Star Wars franchise.

14 Han Solo

Han Solo is, without a doubt, one of the most beloved characters in all of Star Wars. In 2016, Marvel Comics started a miniseries that followed the iconic character during his early days with the rebel alliance. Taking place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, Han Solo embarks on a solo mission that takes him to an infamous spaceship race.

Han Solo must choose between his responsibilities in the alliance and his aspirations to be the best pilot by winning the race. The series is a lot of fun, and it shows the character changing into a strong leader within the rebel alliance.

13 The Rise Of Kylo Ren

Although this is one of the newest comic series in the Marvel Star Wars universe, this series about Kylo Ren delivered a solid run. The Rise Of Kylo Ren shows the growing conflict within him. In the series, Ben Solo feels the looming legacy of his grandfather, and he struggles with the pull to the dark side.

Kylo Ren is a complex character with dueling emotions existing inside of him. The comic series explores these dueling emotions and also has plenty of incredible lightsaber battles. The Knights of Ren are also a big part of the story, which is great because they were only briefly featured in the films, even if many are disappointed by them in this run.

12 Star Wars Special: C-3PO

11

This one-shot comic is such a pleasant little surprise in the Star Wars canon, sitting on its own as one of the most emotional pieces of C-3PO content ever.

It tells the story of a mission gone wrong that leads to C-3PO getting his famous red arm, as seen in The Force Awakens. It adds so much to Threepio's character and explores the mindsets of droids, some of the most undervalued beings in Star Wars.

10 Darth Maul

Darth Maul is undoubtedly one of the best villains in the Star Wars saga, and he has even made a lasting impact on the expanded universe with his role in the animated series. With his double-sided lightsaber and his iconic red spikes, Darth Maul had a unique and intimidating look.

Maul became an instant fan-favorite character when he first appeared in The Phantom Menace. The Darth Maul series takes place just before he first appeared in the film, and it even shows him briefly being tempted by the good side. The series is a great introduction to one of the coolest villains that did not get enough screen time in the films.

9 Son Of Dathomir

The better (arguably) of the two Maul comic runs in the canon is this one which answers a glaring question, so many fans of The Clone Wars had after the famously brilliant Mandalore takeover arc, what happened to Maul?

As fans will remember, Maul was handily dealt with in combat by Sidious, who captured his former apprentice. This comic details Sidious' plan and sees all the main prequel villains coming together, alongside Clone Wars favorite Mother Talzin, and Death Watch in a great, action-packed run.

8 Obi-Wan And Anakin

Obi-Wan And Anakin is an excellent miniseries that started and finished in 2016. Set several years before the infamous Clone Wars, this series follows the master and his padawan in their early years together. The comic series shows the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin growing and facing challenges along the way.

The two Jedi reached their legendary status during the Clone Wars, but prior to this war, the two characters went on some critical missions and grew as the teacher and the student. The series has plenty of beautiful artwork and really dives into two of the most beloved characters in all of Star Wars.

7 Poe Dameron

Also written by Charles Soule, the Poe Dameron series depicts the adventures of the resistance pilot and his squadron. This incredible story shows what Dameron was up to directly before the events of The Force Awakens. As seen in the film, the resistance is in search of Luke Skywalker, and they are tracking down the clues that will complete the map to find him.

Dameron and his beloved droid, BB-8, track down clues trying to find the last Jedi. Throughout the series, they get joined by other X-wing pilots like Snap Wexley. The story of Poe Dameron is excellent because it shows just how good the pilot was, and it involves characters that did not get much screen time in the films.

6 Kanan: The Last Padawan

Kanan faces Clones in the Kanan comic

For fans of the underappreciated Star Wars: Rebels, this comic run, which follows Kanan Jarrus, is an absolute must, and is a fantastic twelve-issue run.

It follows Kanan during his time as Caleb Dume, right at the end of that time, in fact, as we see Kanan and his Master Depa Bilaba when Order 66 gets initiated, and how Kanan both survives that assault and survives in a life on the run.

5 Star Wars

The main comic series being released by Marvel Comics was originally written by Jason Aaron, later being taken over by Kieron Gillen. Both creators brought a lot to the story, adding some important stories that build upon the overall saga. This series features all of the beloved characters from the films, especially Luke Skywalker. Ultimately, the comic series mostly takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

Throughout the series, the main cast of characters experiences important events together, such as the aftermath of the destruction on Jedha, an important place that was not featured in the original films. This main comic series is still ongoing, and it is an excellent story to keep up with for anyone that is a fan of the main heroes of Star Wars.

4 Darth Vader: Dark Lord Of The Sith

This series was written by Charles Soule and illustrated by Giuseppe Camuncoli. The story takes place immediately after Revenge of the Sith, showing how Darth Vader rose to power. The story is a must-read for any Star Wars fan, filling in essential details like Darth Vader creating his iconic red lightsaber. The powerful sith must train and lead his team of assassins to track down the last remaining Jedi.

Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin must learn to respect each other and work together as the Empire expands across the galaxy. The art is beautiful, and the story is full of memorable moments that add a lot to the film saga.

3 Doctor Aphra

Out of all of the original characters that have come from the Star Wars comics, Doctor Aphra stands out as being one of the most unique and compelling characters. Aphra's series has a full cast of memorable characters that help to set the stage for some unforgettable moments.

Because her character is greatly inspired by Indiana Jones, this comic series is packed full of adventure. Doctor Aphra is joined by two 'kill droids' who provide some humorous moments, but at times they definitely live up to their name. This original character has had an incredible comic series, but the character is just perfect for a film or television series that needs to happen.

2 Lando

The Marvel Lando comic is pretty phenomenal, and is the best piece of Lando content since the original trilogy, challenged only by Donald Glover's exceptional performance.

The story revolves around Lando, with his trusty friend Lobot alongside him, as he accidentally steals the personal yacht of none other than the Emperor himself, Sheev Palpatine. It also contains the heartbreaking origin story of Lobot, adding an insane amount of depth to that side character.

1 Darth Vader

Yes, this is the third Darth Vader comic series to appear on the list, but the two are completely different from each other. Dark Lord Of The Sith is an excellent series on its own, telling the story of the early days of Darth Vader and how he first gained his power. This original series, simply titled Darth Vader, was written by Kieron Gillen, and it shows Vader at the height of his dominating power.

Set between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, this series shows the true intimidating powers of the dark side in spectacular fashion. This story also introduced some important original characters, such as Doctor Aphra, who went on to have her own successful series. For any fans of the ultimate Sith, this is a must-read series.
