WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 1, Episode 11, “Devil’s Deal,” streaming now on Disney+.

The Bad Batch Season 1, Episode 11, “Devil’s Deal” was centered on the planet of Ryloth. There, the Empire was hoping to quell a rebellion and consolidate its power. The episode showed a number of key characters from The Clone Wars, including General Cham Syndulla, his wife and Senator Orn Free Taa. It also explained Hera Syndulla’s backstory for the first time in Star Wars canon.

“Devil’s Deal” also introduced a new clone captain named Howzer. He was in charge of the clone garrison on Ryloth, and it was clear that he and Cham had served together for a long time during the Clone Wars. Howzer’s introduction, however, prompted a number of questions from die-hard Star Wars fans when an action figure resembling the captain was released under a different name.

At the beginning of the Bad Batch episode, Orn Free Taa spoke to the people of Ryloth on behalf of the Empire. He praised the Empire's benevolence and thanked them for offering their clone army as a means of protection and order in the galaxy. Of course, not everyone bought what Senator Taa was saying, but when General Cham Syndulla also praised the clones after their faithful service in the Clone Wars, the people started to settle. His experiences with the clone army, and Howzer in particular, allowed him to initially give the Empire’s actions the benefit of the doubt.

Bad Batch Cham Syndulla

While Admiral Rampart was in charge of Imperial operations on Ryloth, Captain Howzer was in charge of the garrison of troops. He and Cham Syndulla talked on a number of occasions and showed their mutual respect for each other. There was even an incident when Hera was caught sneaking around on restricted Imperial property, but Howzer quietly returned her home and promised to not report the incident to his superiors. So, it’s clear that Cham has a confidant in the captain, and that may come in handy because at the end of the episode, Cham was arrested and his daughter went on the run.

It seems like Howzer could be an important player over the next few episodes, but his appearance did confuse some Star Wars fans. The character is included in Hasbro's upcoming Star Wars The Vintage Collection Star Wars: The Bad Batch Special 4-Pack – except, he’s not Howzer. Instead, he is listed as Captain Ballast.

There is no questioning that the character in “Devil’s Deal” and the action figure are one and the same. So, although there hasn't been an official statement, it seems like his name was simply changed sometime in between when the action figures were designed and when the final audio for the episode was recorded. Both animation and toys usually have lengthy development processes, so Hasbro probably received design details, including the name, a while ago. The confusion is warranted, but it’s not the first retcon that The Bad Batch has made to the Star Wars universe, and it probably won’t be the last.

Created by Dave Filoni, Star Wars: The Bad Batch stars Dee Bradley Baker, Andrew Kishino and Ming-Na Wen. New episodes air Fridays on Disney+.
