WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Bad Batch Season 1, Episode 2, "Cut and Run," which is streaming on Disney+.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch's premiere episode featured a number of major characters from other animated Star Wars series, including a pre-Rebels Kanan Jarrus and Clone Wars/Rebels alum Saw Gerrera. By comparison, The Bad Batch Season 1, Episode 2, "Cut and Run," throws viewers a curveball in the form of Cut Lawquane, a clone whose only prior appearance came in the Clone Wars Season 2 episode "The Deserter."

As "The Deserter" revealed, Cut was one of the many clones who fought during the First Battle of Geonosis depicted in Attack of the Clones. Shortly after that, his transport was shot down by Separatist forces, killing most of the clones onboard. Realizing there was no way to stop them, Cut fled as the Separatists' battle droids began executing any clones that survived the crash. He later made his way to the Outer Rim planet Saleucami, where he met and fell in love with a Twi'lek named Suu Lawquane. The pair eventually got married and settled down as farmers, with Cut becoming an adopted father to Suu's children Shaeeah and Jek.

Cut's past finally caught up to him during the Battle of Saleucami, when Suu offered shelter to an injured Captain Rex. The pair initially clashed over their differing beliefs, with Rex taking Cut to task for abandoning his duty to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic. In response, Cut argued that his devotion to his loved ones matters more and questioned the values of the Republic's leaders, especially the way they dehumanize the clones. However, after fighting off a group of BX-series droid commandos, Rex came to respect Cut's motives for his actions and decided not to report him for being a deserter.

"Cut and Run" reveals Rex wasn't the only clone trooper who knew about Cut, confirming he was the old friend Hunter mentioned at the end of The Bad Batch premiere. Over the course of the episode, Cut works with Clone Force 99 to find safe passage off Saleucami, even with the Empire now requiring all citizens to register for a chain code -- one that will make it easier for the totalitarian organization to identify and track their every move. Along the way, Cut advises Hunter to leave behind his life as a soldier and seek a more peaceful existence, similar to the one he's found living with Suu.

By the end of "Cut and Run," it's unclear what the future holds for Cut on The Bad Batch. In the novel Star Wars: Aftermath, the Saleucami farmer Glen Taffral suggested Cut never got involved in another galactic conflict following the Clone Wars. Then again, this is far from a definitive statement about his fate and leaves the door open for the character to reunite with Clone Force 99 on one of their future adventures.

What's more, if Hunter and the others were to ever participate in a clone-led rebellion against the Empire (a la the Kamino Uprising mentioned in Star Wars: Battlefront II), it's certainly plausible Cut would join such a fight, given his righteous anger towards the way clones are treated. Either way, it will be interesting to see if Cut's unexpected return marks the beginning of something bigger for the character.

Created by Dave Filoni, Star Wars: The Bad Batch stars Dee Bradley Baker, Andrew Kishino and Ming-Na Wen. New episodes premiere Fridays on Disney+.
