Andy Serkis, the actor who brought Supreme Leader Snoke to life in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, admits he wasn't fully clued in about the character's true identity.

When asked by ComicBookMovie.com if he knew Snoke was a clone of Palpatine, Serkis said, "It was very much under wraps. Very much under wraps. I had an inkling, but it was not confirmed."

Supreme Leader Snoke made his debut in 2015's The Force Awakens, albeit in hologram form, and the character was to the First Order what Palpatine was to the Galactic Empire. This led many to believe that perhaps Snoke was actually Palpatine in disguise, and despite the character dying in The Last Jedi, those fans were proven partially right in The Rise of Skywalker. In the beginning of Episode IX, Snoke's former apprentice Kylo Ren discovers Palpatine's hideout on Exegol and in doing so, finds bodies resembling Snoke in large canisters. This, coupled with later revelations about Palpatine's experimentation with cloning, confirmed Snoke was merely an extension of the former Emperor.

Actors not knowing the full truth about their characters isn't uncommon in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Daisy Ridley, who played Rey across all three films, recently admitted that for the first two films, "I literally was told that she was no one." In September 2020, she also explained how there were even plans at one point to make Rey a Kenobi. "At the beginning there was toying with, like, an Obi-Wan connection. And then... there were, like, different versions," she said. "And then it really went to that she was no one. And then it came to Episode IX, and J.J. [Abrams] pitched me the film and was like, 'Oh yeah, Palpatine's your granddaddy.' And I was like, 'Awesome.' And then two weeks later, he was like, 'Oh, we're not sure.' So, it kept changing."
