Adriano Goldman, director of photography for Season 1 of Andor, revealed that the upcoming Star Wars project was originally planned to run for five seasons.

In an interview for a Brazilian TV channel, Goldman said, "The series I worked on [Andor] was supposed to be 5 seasons long, but I think it’s not happening, it will have 3 [seasons] maybe." Andor was announced in November 2018, with the first season to consist of twelve episodes. The series will be set five years before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and follow Cassian Andor during his formative years as a Rebel Spy. Diego Luna returns as Andor after originating the character in the 2016 film.

A second season was announced by cast member Stellan Skarsgård in February 2022. "We start with Dune 2 in July. And then in the autumn, it's time for the second season of the Star Wars series Andor," he said at the time. In April 2022, reports indicated Season 2 would begin production in November 2022 at Elstree Studios. It will mark the first time a Star Wars production has filmed at Elstree since the original trilogy ended in the 1980s.

If Andor lasts three seasons, the series would tie The Mandalorian for the longest running live-action Star Wars television series. Season 3 of The Mandalorian is set for release near the end of 2022. Rumors indicate that property might conclude after a fourth season. As of April 2022, Star Wars: The Clone Wars holds the record for longest running Star Wars series. The animated series aired 133 episodes across seven seasons between 2008 and 2020.

Lucasfilm has been focused on expanding the Star Wars galaxy in television following the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga in 2019. Andor joins upcoming series Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Bad Batch Season 2 in exploring the time period between Star Wars: Episode III and Rogue One. The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and the upcoming Ahsoka are set five years after 1983's Return of the Jedi. The Acolyte, set at the end of the High Republic Era, is in pre-production while a series starring Lando Calrissian is in development.

Andor Season 1 premieres on Disney+ in 2022. The series stars Diego Luna, Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgård, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Robert Emms and David Hayman. Forest Whitaker and Genevieve O'Reilly will also be returning as Saw Gerrera and Mon Mothma, respectively, from previous films.
