The most famous examples of alien symbiotes in comics are those related to the Marvel anti-hero Venom and his villainous counterpart Carnage. But a crossover between two of Marvel's Star Wars comics introduced the galaxy far, far away's own dreaded race of symbiotes, one that even frightened the Galactic Empire, and they turned one of their hosts into the Star Wars version of a vampire.

The crossover began in Kieron Gillen and Marco Checchetto's Star Wars: Screaming Citadel one-shot before running through four issues of Marvel's ongoing  Star Wars and Doctor Aphra series. At the beginning of the event Doctor Aphra, the rogue archaeologist who had once worked for Darth Vader, made a deal with Luke Skywalker. Aphra needed Luke to accompany her to meet the Queen of the planet Ktath'atn, who Aphra believed would be able to activate a crystal she recovered from the Ordu Aspectu temple, which contained a copy of the personality of a Jedi Master. Aphra agrees to let Luke learn from the Jedi in exchange for presenting himself to the Queen as a Jedi himself, as the Queen is obsessed with studying rare biology and Aphra believes doing so is the only way to get her to agree to activate the crystal.

After Luke accidentally displays his Force powers in front of the Queen, she invites him and Aphra to stay with her for dinner, during which she has him telekinetically lift the cover off a tray. When he does so it reveals three insect-like creatures. Luke and Aphra flee and as they do so she tells him they are "Abersyn symbiotes," which are known as "One of the most dangerous organisms in the galaxy." She explains that once they make contact with a person they "take over all brain and motor functions," and can cause death in a year's time. When Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Sana Starros arrive to help Luke, Aphra mentions how the symbiotes are so dangerous even the Empire refuses to use them as weapons.

The Queen herself is infected with one of the most powerful symbiotes, which gives her abilities and limitations that other hosts don't share. She has mind control abilities, allowing her to quickly enthrall Han and Luke and seems to feed off of both life force and blood. Between this and her unnaturally pale skin tone the Queen bares significant similarity to a vampire, though she doesn't possess any of the other quintessential characteristics of one, such as a  vulnerability to sunlight. She is interested in Luke because she hopes that feeding off of him will greatly increase her power because of his Force-sensitivity. The symbiotes react strangely with Wookie biology, however, and the "heroes" take advantage of this, with Triple-Zero purposely infecting Black Krrsantan. This greatly increases Krrsantan's strength and sends him into a violent rage, which Leia, Sana, and Aphra's droids use to infiltrate the Queen's fortress, the Screaming Citadel.

The Screaming Citadel

After the crystal is activated Aphra leaves but changes her mind and returns to save Luke. She infects him with one of the symbiotes, which have a strict belief in following whichever of them is deemed the most powerful. After bonding with a Jedi, Luke's symbiote declares itself king and begins battling the Queen. Aphra throws Luke the crystal in the hopes that the Jedi inside, Rur, can help. Unfortunately, Rur turns out to be corrupt and encourages Luke to embrace the power offered by the symbiote. But Luke rejects both of them and breaks free of their influence before taking down the Queen himself.

After Leia and company kill some of the other hosts, a symbiote that had infected Han is left in the position of power. But, after realizing that he has no interest in being a king, Han orders the other symbiotes to leave their hosts, which they do, and Triple-Zero is easily able to remove his. After everyone leaves the planet, one of the formerly enslaved people of Ktath'atn is infected by the Queen's symbiote, which has managed to survive, implying that the planet of symbiotes will continue to thrive under new leadership.
