Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew recently confirmed that "talks" have been held regarding a Captain Janeway spinoff similar to Star Trek: Picard.

Mulgrew discussed the potential spinoff during a panel appearance at Star Trek convention 56-Year-Mission Las Vegas (also known as STLV). "I would say very simply 'That's up to you,'" she said, indicating the audience with a wave of her hand. "There are talks, you know? There are conversations. Have I been offered anything directly? No. I think they're looking at Picard. They're looking at the value of Picard. They're looking at the reaction to Picard. I'm sure all of you loved it, didn't you? I don't know what they're thinking, but I think that Janeway was one of a kind, right? I don't know, but I do think it is up to you [indicates crowd] as it is up to me."

Captain Kathryn Janeway made her debut in Star Trek: Voyager's premiere episode, "Caretaker," headlining the series for its entire seven season run. The Starfleet captain subsequently made a brief cameo in 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis and plays a supporting role (both as herself and as an Emergency Training Holographic Advisor modeled on her voice and likeness) in 2021 animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. In each instance, Janeway is portrayed by Mulgrew, who only landed the role after original choice Geneviève Bujold bowed out after two days of shooting on Voyager.

Picard's Final Star Trek Mission Approaches

Mulgrew's comments suggest that the likelihood of a Captain Janeway spinoff happening hinges largely on the performance of Star Trek: Picard, which is slated to release its third and final season in 2023. A new trailer for Picard dropped in July 2022, which prominently features the return of star Patrick Stewart's former Star Trek: The Next Generation colleagues LeVar Burton, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Jonathan Frakes and Gates McFadden, who reprise their roles on that series.

Picard Season 3's showrunner Terry Matalas discussed reuniting the Next Generation cast in a recent interview, revealing that each actor was encouraged to contribute to their respective character's arc. "I didn’t want to make anything that they didn’t want to make… They all have big things to do," he said. "We all meet them and find out where they are now. And some of those answers as to what they're doing now are unexpected. So I wanted them to be happy and have input… They’ve lived with these characters. They go to the conventions. They know the stories that matter to these people."

All seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager and the first two seasons of Picard are currently streaming on Paramount+. Picard Season 3 is set to premiere sometime in 2023.
