Picard marks Patrick Stewart's return to the Star Trek franchise, and so far he is the only Star Trek: The Next Generation actor confirmed for the series. However, appearances from other Next Generation actors or characters could still happen over the course of the series.

"What we don’t want to do is just throw in cameos,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman told Entertainment Weekly. “There would have to be an incredibly specific story reason [for them to be there].”

Kurtzman confirmed that Picard's new regular cast members Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway are not portraying any preexisting The Next Generation characters.

While Jonathan Frakes, Commander William Riker to Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, directed a few episodes of the ten-episode season, it's unclear if he will make an on-screen return.

The series will see Stewart return as an older, retired Picard who is no longer part of Starfleet. This marks Stewart's first outing as Picard since the 2002 feature film Star Trek: Nemesis.
