While Jean-Luc Picard has certainly had his fair share of action-packed adventures captaining the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation and its subsequent films, the upcoming Star Trek: Picard will be more focused on emotional drama.

While promoting the new CBS All Access series, executive producer Akiva Goldsman compared Picard to its contemporary counterpart Star Trek: Discovery, with the observation that Discovery has leaned more into sci-fi action while Picard is more deliberately paced.

"Discovery, for example, is science fiction action-adventure. Picard is science fiction drama," Goldsman explained in an interview with TVLine. "Science fiction is a way of telling all sorts of stories, and yes, the kinds of stories we’re telling in Picard are probably more emotion-based. They’re slower, and they’re about this particular cusp of life, which is a story that is not typically told these days, certainly not in television.”

The upcoming series sees a haunted Picard retired from Starfleet while running his family vineyard in France. After encountering a mysterious girl, Picard finds himself drawn back into outer space for a new adventure that could change the course of the United Federation.
