Star Trek: Picard showrunner Terry Matalas teased that not all the returning Star Trek: The Next Generation characters will make it out of the final season unharmed.

In an interview with SFX, Matalas said that every member of TNG could be on the chopping block, although he stops short of speculating on any possible deaths. "I'm not gonna say they all necessarily make it out safely of season three," the showrunner said. Despite this, he expressed confidence that Picard Season 3 won't be the last time fans see these characters on their screens. At the time of writing, the fate of the beloved crew remains unknown.

Picard Season 3 sees the titular hero, once again played by Patrick Stewart, facing threats with ties to his past as three of his most challenging foes return to plague him once more. One such villain is Amanda Plummer, playing a character named Vadic, the commander of a deadly ship called the Shrike, who has a score to settle with Picard and his old crew. Data's twin brother Lore, portrayed by Brent Spiner, who appeared several times on TNG as an antagonist to the Enterprise crew, is also expected to return. Daniel Davis will also reprise his role as Professor Moriarty from two popular TNG episodes.

Besides Stewart, Picard originally starred, Allison Pill as Dr. Agness Jurati, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal Rios, Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, Evan Evagora as Elnor and Isa Briones as Soji. With The Next Gen cast appearing in season three, the only returning cast members from Picard seasons one and two are Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd as Seven of Nine and Raffi, respectively.

Although some characters might not make it out of the season alive, there is a real possibility of more stories with the TNG cast. "I will say that in science fiction, there are always ways of seeing people again," Matalas further revealed. Despite this tease, there are currently no other known plans to further the TNG franchise. The showrunner also teased that audiences might have some resolution to the story of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 premieres on Paramont+ on Feb. 16. New episodes will be released every Thursday.
