Patrick Stewart is going to find his Jean-Luc Picard "tormented" when he returns to the Star Trek franchise for the CBS All Access series, Star Trek: Picard.

“He’s a bit tormented, actually,” Stewart told TVLine when discussing how Picard has changed in the 20 years since his last appearance in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis movie.

“In looking back at his regrets, Picard says, ‘I let the perfect be the enemy of the good,'” executive producer Alex Kurtzman hinted. “He held, as he always has, such a high moral bar for how to behave in complicated gray areas. Then when he felt that Starfleet didn’t act in that interest, he took his toys and went home.”

Kurtzman added that Picard is “still very much the Jean-Luc that we know from Next Generation” though now he is a more broken man. "And he no longer has an armada behind him… It’s very easy to be the great man who faces complicated choices when you have an army behind you," he said. "It’s much harder when you don’t."

Star Trek: Picard stars Patrick Stewart, Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway. The series is set to premiere on CBS All Access Jan. 23.
