Michael Dorn, who first played Worf on Star Trek: The Next Generation, discussed his ambitions to create a Captain Worf spinoff series focused on the future of the Klingon Empire.

Speaking with TrekMovie.com, Dorn provided a detailed set-up of what a Captain Worf series would look like, even going so far as to say that he "has the script ready." While there have been numerous Star Trek stories told in the past 55 years, Dorn's version takes a previously unexplored path, boldly going where no writer has gone before by "[looking] at Starfleet from the Klingon Empire."

The Klingons have been a willful and insular society for years, beginning as the main antagonists in Star Trek: The Original Series, but -- according to Dorn -- since their empire is crumbling, they must adapt or die. This leads them to slowly allow other races into the Klingon world by way of the Federation's Starfleet officers and furthermore, change their traditionally brutal interplanetary politics. Dorn explained, "the Klingon universe is just like the Federation. They have planets and worlds and societies that they own, but they do it in a brutal way. And so they have to go out to every one of these worlds and either give them their freedom or try to work with them, which is something that’s anathema to Klingons," which is where Worf comes in.

Worf was a proud member of the Klingon race born on Qo'noS (the Klingon homeworld pronounced Kronos) but he was also orphaned as a child and raised on Earth by human parents and the first-ever Klingon officer in Starfleet. While his identity pulled him in multiple directions, Worf's practice standing between two worlds has prepared him for the mission Dorn has in store. Dorn explains, "since Worf opened his big mouth and said, 'This is what we have to do,' then they [The Klingon Empire] say, 'Okay, then you’re the guy that has to go out to all these worlds.' And every world is different. Some worlds are rebelling. Some worlds want to be part of the Klingon Empire. Some worlds want to be independent. And so every episode is that."

No longer a Starfleet officer, Worf would be a Captain of his own ship and part of the Klingon Defense Force. Dorn intends for the series to be "Shakespearean in its scope. There’s assassinations and coups and behind-the-scenes politics going on." He believes that his script confidently builds off of untapped but established material from the Star Trek universe that has been sitting there for years saying, "It’s such a great fit and it doesn’t feel like anything else that’s on All Access. It’s funny because it’s like they are looking for something and they’ve totally ignored this easy path."

Dorn's former co-star Sir Patrick Stewart has recently revisited his role as Jean-Luc Picard on CBS All Access in another spinoff series, Picard, opening up potential avenues of crossover if Dorn's Captain Worf series were to hit the screen. Currently, there are no concrete plans for the series but Dorn remains hopeful, saying, "I don’t know if it’s dead or not. I have the script ready. [laughs] It’s on my computer and ready to be emailed to anybody that’s interested. But we’ll see."
