Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser Takes a Much Lighter Approach

While most of the promotional push for Star Trek Into Darkness has filled with gloom and doom -- not to mention the ominous, ever-present Inception-style BRAAAAAM! -- the latest teaser for the J.J. Abrams breaks out the humor and straight-up action.

The trailer not only features Kirk (Chris Pine) and Bones (Karl Urban) running through a red forest, with some unfriendlies in hot pursuit, but also lots of people jumping through space, an underwater bit, Pike (Bruce Greenwood) calling Kirk a loose cannon, John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) looking vaguely threatening, some fancy flying and a very dramatic reintroduction to the Enterprise.

Here's the official synopsis from Paramount:

In summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Star Trek Into Darkness, which opens May 17, also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, Peter Weller, Anton Yelchin and John Cho.
