“Star Trek Into Darkness” warped into IMAX theaters on Wednesday, followed by a general release on Thursday, but even with those extra days of ticket sales it still failed to hit the $100 million mark some were expecting it would make in its North American opening.
According to Variety, the well-reviewed film made $84.1 million since opening in North America, while its global total grew to $164.6 million. From Friday to Sunday, it brought in took in $70.55 million, compared to its 2009 predecessor’s $75.2 million in its opening weekend.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” pushed “Iron Man 3” out of the top spot in North America, which brought in $35 million domestically and $40.2 million overseas. The latest Marvel film passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office on Thursday, becoming only the 16th film to do so.
