A new Star Trek film is in development at Paramount, and it has already found its writer.

According to DeadlineStar Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez will write the script for an original movie set in the iconic sci-fi universe. JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce the film, which is expected to expand Vazquez's role in the Paramount's Star Trek plans.

The Star Trek film franchise has been stalled since the release of 2016's Star Trek Beyond, a sequel to 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness. While cast members Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are hoping a fourth film is in the cards, no official announcement has come from Paramount. Other Star Trek films from Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley have also been lagging in development for some time now.

"It doesn't appear to be in my immediate future," Hawley said of his film in Nov. 2020. "I think when [new Paramount Pictures president Emma Watts] came in, she took a look at the franchise and wanted to go in a different direction with it. But you know, life is long, we were very close to production but in this business that doesn’t mean much. You got to get out of the gate to be in the race if you know what I mean."

"I think they might make that movie, but I just don't think I'm going to direct it. It's a good idea. They should definitely do it and I'll be happy to come in and give them some notes on the first rough cut," Tarantino said in January 2020.

Paramount has had more luck with the TV side of the franchise. Star Trek: Discovery wrapped its third season in January and has been renewed for Season 4. Meanwhile, Star Trek: Picard just started filming its second season. A third live-action series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, also just began filming, and will premiere on Paramount+. That series follows the adventures of Christopher Pike and Spock.

Vazquez's other credits include Runaways, Once Upon a Time, Nikita, Human Target and Prison Break. She is also teaming up with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin for a TV adaptation of Roger Zelazny's sci-fi novel Roadmarks for HBO.
