With Star Trek: Discovery exactly one month away from returning for its second season on CBS All Access, a new photo hints at a deep, personal connection between two of its new characters, Captain Christopher Pike and first officer Number One.

Released by television news site TVLine, the photos shows Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn's characters in the mess hall conversing over a meal. The duo appear to be having a meaningful discussion with their posture and facial expressions teasing a more intimate dynamic between the two than seen before.

Previously, the characters were depicted by Jeffrey Hunter and Majel Barrett on the first pilot for the original Star Trek series in the 60s. After a new pilot with the now-iconic cast was commissioned instead, footage from the first pilot was later utilized in a two-part episode in the series' first season.

While the original dynamic was depicted as entirely professional, the expanded look at the characters Discovery offers could change their relationship in interesting ways.
