CBS All Access' brand new series Star Trek: Discovery has gotten off to an incredibly strong start, drawing in 8 million viewers for the premiere episode and helping lead to a 64% spike in downloads for the network's streaming application. However, the cast of the series now has their sights set on a new commander -- one they think could learn a valuable lesson from Discovery's depiction of diversity and representation: our Commander-in-Chief, Donald Trump.

“I hope [President Trump] puts his phone down for awhile and watches the show,” Jason Isaacs (Captain Lorca) told The Hollywood Reporter at PaleyFest NY this past weekend.

“In the very beginning, [Fuller’s] message was this is going to being a show with a woman of color as its lead and that was what we all set out to do and that’s what we’ve done,” added executive producer Aaron Harberts. “I’m very proud of all of the diversity on the show. Gender identity, sexual orientation, race and it is really just a representation of what the world is.”

Steering the conversation back in the direction of our nation's POTUS, producer Alex Kurtzman remarked that although the 2016 presidential election didn't change the direction of Discovery, it did cause them to double down on the message they were already looking to deliver with the series. “The tone of the show actually got stronger in the direction we were already going because we recognized how important it was for the core message of Trek to be amplified after the election,” Kutzman explained.

Sonequa Martin-Green, who plays first officer Michael Burnham, also chimed in, stating how she believes Discovery delivers a message of hope at a time when our nation is filled with so much hostility.

“I think right now we’re up against insurmountable odds and we’re in such a divisive place and it’s so volatile and hostile, and I think [Star Trek: Discovery] is a representation of what is possible,” she said. “We are obviously a picture of hope and I think when you see that you can pull it into your life.”

Set 10 years before the adventures of Kirk and Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series, Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp, with Alex Kurtzman, Bryan Fuller, Heather Kadin, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Akiva Goldsman, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth serving as Executive Producers.

The series is currently streaming on CBS All Access in the United States, Crave TV in Canada, and Netflix internationally; it kicked off on September 24, and will run until November 12 before taking a short break until airing its second half in January 2018.
