The far-future setting for Star Trek: Discovery is explored in a new opening credits sequence, released ahead of the Season 3 premiere by CBS. Among the more intriguing details in the new sequence, from modified phasers to an advanced fleet of robots, is a redesigned Starfleet insignia.Instead of the isolated, triangular shape that had a mainstay with the franchise, the Star Trek symbol now has a black background, separated base and line through the right side of the insignia. Pips on the right side indicate officer rank as displayed on the collars of officers in The Next Generation era.RELATED: Star Trek: Discovery Releases Time-Traveling Season 3 Opening Scene

Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Shazad Latif as Ash Tyler, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Mary Chieffo as L'Rell, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno, Ethan Peck as Spock, Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
