It's been a long wait, but fans of Star Trek: Discovery can finally put their Starfleet jump suits back on: CBS All Access has finally announced a premiere date for Season 2.

While it was rumored for a long time, the streaming service revealed this morning that the upcoming season will indeed arrive in January 2019. We may not have an exact date for the premiere yet, but at least fans now know that the wait is almost over: the new season is only three months away. The announcement was reported by Entertainment Weekly, which also debuted a new poster for Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.

Star Trek Discovery Season 2 poster

The new teaser poster traces the familiar Federation logo through the vastness of space in the form of red lights. This is a hint at the main storyline of the upcoming season: in the trailer released this summer at Comic-Con International in San Diego, it was revealed that the emergence of mysterious red lights all over the cosmos would drive the story of Season 2 forward.

What's more, these red lights are somehow tied to lead character Michael Burnham's adoptive brother Spock, who will be a new addition to the cast of the series. After being played by Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto, Ethan Peck will now put on the pointy ears of the logic-based Vulcan.

Peck isn't the only new addition to Star Trek: Discovery. Anson Mount has also joined the cast of the series as Captain Christopher Pike, who helmed the conn of the U.S.S. Enterprise before James T. Kirk. Season 1 of Discovery ended with the title starship coming face-to-face with the Enterprise, and the trailer of Season 2 revealed that Pike would assume the leadership position of the Discovery, which now finds itself without a Captain following the death of Captain Lorca.

While Season 2 is still months away, fans have the Star Trek: Short Treks miniseries to look forward to, the first episode of which is scheduled to air this Thursday, Oct. 4.

We should learn more about the upcoming season of Star Trek: Discovery during the series' panel this weekend at New York Comic Con.

Returning in January 2019 on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo, and Anson Mount. The first season will be released on Blu-ray on November 13.
