Images from the upcoming season of the Paramount show have hinted at some of the dusty, harsh landscapes set to the appear in the upcoming season, though no details have yet been announced. Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery will be comprised of ten episodes. For comparison, previous seasons have featured 13 episodes or more, with the longest being Season 1, which was made up of 15 episodes in total.

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Discovery debuted in 2017 on CBS All Access, later rebranded as Paramount+. The show takes place prior to the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, the show underwent a major setting change following Season 2, with the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery venturing into the distant future. Critical reception for Star Trek: Discovery has been largely positive, though the show's later seasons have enjoyed somewhat greater success among audiences and critics.

Read the official summary for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 below:

"In season five, Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well… dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it."

Where Did Star Trek: Discovery Leave Us?

When audiences last saw the U.S.S. Discovery in Season 4, Burnham's crew had finished dealing with a dark matter anomaly-- a singularity moving across the galaxy that threatened to consume everything in its path. Burnham and her crew discovered it was created by a mysterious civilization outside of the galaxy known as Species-10C to mine for resources. Ultimately, they were able to make first contact with Species-10C and resolve the crisis peacefully.

But whatever more Season 5 adds to the Discovery's adventures, the show will not see its close anytime soon. At least not according to star Sonequa Martin-Green. When asked about the prospect of a series finale, the actor previously explained, "Well, the show is definitely rolling forward, thankfully... There haven't been talks about the endgame yet. We talk a lot about things that we still want to see, or at least they share with me ideas that they have."

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 is scheduled to premiere in 2023.
