By making Sonequa Martin-Green's Commander Michael Burnham Spock's foster sibling, Star Trek: Discovery retroactively made that previously-unmentioned character a big part of Trek history.
A popular fan theory within the Star Trek: Discovery fandom centers around the precise nature of the relationship of Burnham and Spock, who's played by Ethan Peck on Discovery. The theory suggests that the pair were more than just family, and that their relationship eventually became romantic, which could explain why Spock never mentioned her before.
However, a new interview with Martin-Green may have just put a damper on that idea.
During a recent appearance on The Talk, a CBS talk show, Martin-Green was asked about the possibility of a romantic relationship between Spock and Burnham.
"People are saying that maybe they had a sexual relationship and that's why they are estranged. Not true," Martin-Green said. "I'm here to say that's not true."
While romantic entanglements might be off the table, there are still plenty of questions about what happened between Burnham and Spock, which will probably be addressed as Discovery goes on.
