Slowly but surely, "Star Trek: Discovery" has been assembling an all-new crew. Today, the anticipated series has filled one of the most important positions by announcing who will be sitting in the captain's chair.

Star Fleet's newest vessel, the NCC-1031 USS Discovery, will be captained by Jason Isaacs.

In the past, the captain has typically been presented as the main character, from Kirk to Picard to Sisko to Janeway to Archer. That will not be the case here, however, as Isaacs's Captain Lorca will be a supporting character to Sonequa Martin-Green's lieutenant commander.

It has been indicated a few times that "Discovery" will not be a traditional "Trek" show, following different characters of different ranks on a few different starships, as they all navigate one unifying (or divisive) incident.

Still, Isaacs is an interesting choice. On the one hand, the actor has should be at home embodying the virtues of a Federation captain, offering the unflappability, professionalism and gravitas we would expect from the same organization that promoted Ben Sisko and Jean-Luc Picard. On the other hand, Isaacs is usually the bad guy! In fact, you may best know him as Lucius Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" films, or maybe you're more familiar with the sinister roles he's played in his voice acting career such as the dreaded Inquisitor in "Star Wars: Rebels," or Admiral Zhao in "Avatar: the Last Airbender." It makes you wonder if Isaacs will be playing a captain in the heroic mold of the past, or if "Star Trek: Discovery" plans to diverge from previous "Star Trek" shows in more ways than one.

“Star Trek: Discovery” stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Maulik Pancholy, and Michelle Yeoh. It  is currently slated for a May 2017 premiere.
