WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 2, "Far From Home," now streaming on CBS All Access.

One of the biggest wild cards on board the Discovery is Philippa Georgiou. However, she's not quite the Starfleet officer introduced to audiences at the start of the series. Instead, the Georgiou that has appeared since the end of the inaugural season is a doppelgänger from the sinister Mirror Universe, as violent and scheming as the main universe's was noble and virtuous. Stranded in the main universe, the Mirror Georgiou begrudgingly served in Starfleet but was still not entirely trustworthy. And now, with the starship transported 930 years into the future, Georgiou has proven perfectly suited for this strange, new world.

Following Season 2's climactic battle against the malevolent artificial intelligence program Control and a rogue Section 31, the Discovery and Michael Burnham were transported into the far future. Relieved that the universe still contained organic life, the crew finds themselves grounded on an unforgiving ice planet and must race against time to regain their systems before the sun goes down and prematurely ends their trip to the future before it can truly begin. As Saru and Tilly explore the planet for the rubindium necessary to complete repairs, Georgiou secretly tails them before revealing herself and just how badass she truly is.

Saru and Tilly are exposed by Zareh, a local crime lord, who seizes the landing party's gear and prepares to sell it on the black market. The situation looks increasingly dire for the Starfleet officers, but Georgiou comes to the rescue. She begins to taunt Zareh, despite the mobster being heavily armed. Zareh shoots Georgiou with his energy weapons, which were previously employed to execute an ally of Saru and Tilly from the local populace. However, because of her insults and continued defiance, Zareh decides to inflict pain on Georgiou as a sort of torture rather than kill her instantly.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 2 recap & spoilers.

While initially reacting with pain, Georgiou ultimately shrugs off Zareh's blasts, observing, "What you call torture, I call foreplay." Georgiou exaggerated the impact of Zareh's torture just to get closer to him. She then throttles the crime lord and kills several of his enforcers. Having disarmed him, Georgiou prepares to execute him on the spot, only to be restrained by Saru. Surprisingly the Mirror Universe warrior agrees to comply after momentarily menacing the Discovery captain with Zareh's lethal weaponry.

In one fell swoop, Georgiou reminds everyone exactly how lethal she can be and how much she enjoys toying with her prey before moving in for the kill. Dismissing torture and bodily harm as a minor inconvenience, Georgiou may be the Discovery's greatest asset for survival in this harsh world where Starfleet can't aid them. While Georgiou has been an unlikely ally to the crew for some time, the threat of her suddenly betraying the Discovery has been omnipresent. Now, in a vision of the future that rewards violence and ruthlessness rather that Starfleet's founding principles, Georgiou may abandon her old allies to strike out on her own.

Streaming on CBS All Access, Star Trek: Discovery stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Commander Michael Burnham, Doug Jones as Commander Saru, Anthony Rapp as Lt. Commander Paul Stamets, Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly, Wilson Cruz as Dr. Hugh Culber, David Ajala as Cleveland "Book" Booker, Blu del Barrio as Adira, Ian Alexander as Grey, Tig Notaro as Chief Engineer Reno and Michelle Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou.
