Over the last five seasons of The Flash, the team at STAR Labs has created some of the most amazing inventions the world has ever seen. They have been vital to helping the Flash stop any threat to Central City (and the world for that matter).

It doesn’t mean they haven’t hit a few speedbumps along the way, designing technology that has done more harm than good. You can’t make a Flash omelet without breaking a few Rogue eggs. Here are five inventions used for the benefit of humanity, and five used in attempts to destroy it.

10 10. Bad: The Pipeline Prison

The Pipeline Prison, located within the Particle Accelerator at STAR Labs, was excellent in theory. Each cell was designed to nullify the powers of any villainous metahuman until they could find a way to “cure” them. It’s not a logistics issue that made the Pipeline a bad idea, but a moral one. Regardless of the crimes, due process within the legal system is still a thing.

Then again, when the Eobard Thawne version of Harry Wells came up with the idea, “due process” was the last thing on his mind. Having helped Iron Heights Prison install their metahuman cells, STAR Labs still uses the Pipeline, but only in the direst of circumstances.

9 9. Good: The Tachyon Accelerator

Just like the Reverse-Flash, Zoom was an enemy too fast for Barry to defeat. After going back in time and asking Harrison Wells (Thawne) for help, the team creates a tachyon accelerator to help Barry increase his speed. The device worked with a surprising side effect. During one of the tests, Barry accidentally opens a breach to another Earth.

This new Earth is the home to Kara (Zor-El) Danvers, also known as Supergirl. This first meeting between the two heroes led to Supergirl assisting with the Invasion, the Crisis on Earth-X, and the Elseworlds. The tachyon accelerator, regardless of its intended use, gave the worlds the Arrowverse Trinity of Supergirl, Flash, and Green Arrow.

8 8. Bad: Snart's Cold Gun

For nine months, Barry was in a coma following the accelerator explosion. No one knew what kind of person he would be when he woke up. Yes, it turned out he was a hero, but it still took time to earn that trust. During that “feeling out” period, Cisco had to make sure Central City was protected should Barry not to be the man he claimed.

Taking a page out of Batman’s book from JLA: Tower of Babel, Cisco created a “cold gun” that would slow down Barry’s molecules and rendering his speed inert. Unfortunately, the gun was stolen by renowned thief Leonard Snart, who in turn used it to become the super-villain, Captain Cold. While Snart and his odd sense of honor could be a “good invention” argument, Snart has been a thorn is Barry side more often than not. Therefore it makes the “bad” list.

7 7. Bad: Gideon

Gideon is an A.I. utilized by Eobard Thawne via a secret room in STAR Labs. Thawne uses it to see into the future and how to adjust his plans accordingly. It is also the on-board system used on the Waverider by the Legends. In theory, this should be a fantastic invention. Having a computer show you how fluid the future is by continually showing the changes made to it should help a person live their best life.

It’s the world of the Flash, so that’s not the case. The STAR Labs Gideon consistently shows team Flash the different ways they’ve screwed up the timeline. No matter how many times they “fix” things, Gideon is always there to say, “Hold on a second.”

6 6. Good: Gingold

In the comics, Gingold was a soda created from an extract of the gingo fruit. It is this that gave Ralph Dibny his powers and his identity as the Elongated Man. The TV series tells a different story. Ralph gains his stretching ability when a dark matter wave hits a bus he was riding. Eventually, he was found by Barry and the team and taken to STAR Labs where Caitlin creates a Gingold serum.

The serum, instead of granting him powers, help stabilize him. The serum allows Ralph to meet his full potential as a crucial member of Team Flash.

5 5. Bad: Velocity Serum

The Velocity serum is a series of formulas used to boost the abilities of a speedster. Caitlin Snow and Jay Garrick, the Flash of Earth-2, began studying it as a way to give Jay his speed back, which had been taken by Zoom.

Their collaboration was all a ruse, as this Garrick was Zoom (Hunter Zolomon) in disguise, and wanted the Velocity serum (now in its ninth incarnation) to enhance his already impressive speed. The serum also cost a woman, Eliza Harmon, who stole the serum for herself, not knowing the side effects on non-speedsters.

4 4. Good: Vibe's Glasses

It took him a little longer than other metahumans, but it turned out Cisco Ramon was also affected by the particle accelerator explosion. Gaining the ability to see through time and space, Cisco took on the identity of Vibe.

In the beginning, he had a hard time learning to control his power, almost losing himself within his “vibes,” looking like he’s waking up from a nightmare anytime he comes out of them. That’s why he designed special glasses that helped him focus. It’s similar to Spider-Man’s mask, but this overstimulation is interdimensional.

3 3. Bad: (Tie) Rory's Heat Gun/Lisa's Golden Gun

Leonard Snart, Lisa Snart, and Mick Rory are technically the first members of the Flash’s “Rogues.” After kidnapping Cisco, they threaten the life of his brother Dante unless he creates new versions of the Cold and Heat guns. On top of that, he creates a weapon for Lisa that shoots gold energy, giving her the moniker of the Golden Glider.

One of the main themes of the Flash has been how everyone has to trust each other if the team is going to be successful. Had Cisco trusted Barry from the start, there would be no cold, heat, or gold gun.

2 2. Good: The Flash Costume

Cisco Ramon originally designed the suit to help firefighters with its enhanced heat and friction resistance material. Little did he know it also worked as a way to prevent a man who has access to the Speed Force not have his clothes catch on fire every time he breaks the sound barrier.

It has gone through some upgrades over the years, but its iconic design has never wavered. Barry Allen and his strong character make up 99% of who the Flash is, but that last one percent is the awesome suit.

1 1. Good: The Particle Accelerator

Eobard Thawne would do anything to return to his own time even if that means creating his most hated enemy. Trapped in the past after murdering Barry’s mother, Thawne takes over the identity of Dr. Harrison Wells and becomes head of STAR Labs. It is there that he hires the right minds to help create the particle accelerator.

He rigs it to explode, and the ensuing chaos creates the lighting bolt that grants Barry his speed. The particle accelerator, while the greatest invention of STAR Labs, can’t be defined as either good or evil. While it created some of the world’s greatest villains, it also gave the world some of its greatest heroes.
