We’ve seen Stan Lee host cartoons and appear in movies based on the comics he co-created, but now the 89-year-old icon can add another unique title to his resume: playable video game character. Sure, Lee has appeared in games based on Marvel characters before, but, if you order the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 version of Activision’s Amazing Spider-Man video game from Amazon, you can actually play as the Man himself.
“I love being involved in anything that has to do with characters that I’ve created in the past,”Lee told The Hollywood Reporter. “When they suggested this, I jumped at the opportunity.”
In the game, which takes place in the same world as director Marc Webb’s upcoming movie, you can play the dapper Lee, who comes dressed in a suit and tie, just as you would Spider-Man. However, game developer Beenox also created a unique mission in which you run through New York City trying to find the pages to the comic script Lee just wrote.
While some people in the comic book world blame new media like video games for drawing kids away from comics, Lee thinks the relationship between the two is actually a lot more symbiotic.
“Comics get kids interested in video games, and video games, in case a kid picks one up first, tends to get kids interested in comics,” he said. “Just like the movies today, the super hero movies have made a lot of people who didn’t read comic books turn to comics. People who went to see Iron Man, loved it, and had never read a comic, started looking for Iron Man comics to read, and so forth. It works either way.”
The film, which opens July 3, stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Campbell Scott, C. Thomas Howell, Embeth Davidtz and Annie Parisse. The video game comes out June 26.
