Squirrel Girl has rapidly risen through Marvel's ranks to become one of the publisher's most beloved characters. And in January 2017 Squirrel Girl is celebrating her 25th anniversary with a special commemorative issue of her ongoing series.

As Marvel Comics announced during the Marvel Now: Divided We Stand panel at New York Comic Con, "Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" #16 will feature two tales starring the unbeatable Avenger. Writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson will continue their run with the popular character, and Squirrel Girl co-creator Will Murray will pen an all-new story (also drawn by Henderson).

Squirrel Girl debuted 25 years ago in "Marvel Super-Heroes" volume 2 #8 in a story co-written by Murray and legendary artist Steve Ditko. Murray's new story, appearing in "Unbeatable" #16, will be his second Squirrel Girl story ever. The new tale takes place on Squirrel Girl's 15th birthday and will see her throw down with the Hulk.

Squirrel Girl's rise to popularity is itself an interesting story; after debuting in a back-up story in "Marvel Super-Heroes," Squirrel Girl did not return to a comics page for 13 years. Dan Slott brought her out of limbo for his "G.L.A." limited series in 2005. She popped up every now and then for the next few years and finally saw her profile increase in 2011 when Brian Michael Bendis added her to his "New Avengers" cast. Squirrel Girl then landed her own ongoing series from North and Henderson in 2015.

"Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" #16 arrives in stores in January 2017.
