Netflix hit Squid Game has not been renewed for a second season just yet, despite initial reports.

In an interview with Vulture, Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk explained that while he is working on ideas for a future season, the show hasn't been renewed by Netflix yet. The confusion of a "confirmed" second season comes after a mistranslation of Dong-hyuk's comment he gave in an interview with the Associated Press last month. The subtitles claimed the director said, "I will say there will indeed be a second season," when he actually said, "I think there will indeed be a Season 2." A Netflix spokesperson added that a potential second season of Squid Game is "in discussions but not confirmed yet."

Dong-hyuk said he is feeling significant pressure as he puts together a script for the next installment of Squid Game. "I have somewhat of a framework for the next season," he explained. "But I also have to admit that I feel increasingly more pressure about Season 2 as the series has gotten so much more love and attention than I could have expected. I also have a film I've been planning to shoot after Squid Game, and I haven't made up my mind about which one I should do first."

Touching on the success of the series, Dong-hyuk explained that he always felt the show could have a global appeal due to its themes of economic inequality and modern capitalism. "From the time I decided to create this story with Netflix, I had the goal of having it recognized by global audiences, so I somewhat expected the series would be well received," he explained. "But I never imagined it would become the global sensation it is now."

"Global sensation" is the perfect description for the series, as viewers watched an astounding 1.65 billion hours of Squid Game in its first 28 days on Netflix, with 142 million households tuning in to watch the Korean drama. The show broke the record previously held by Bridgerton, becoming the most-watched show on Netflix ever. The potential for a second season of Squid Game, therefore, comes as no surprise, especially after the show left the story on a cliffhanger.

The first season of Squid Game is currently streaming on Netflix.
